Another thing could have been that I had a leak from the oil drain bolt and didnt know, I was running an 08 SI civic pretty hard one morning and it was really after that when I noticed the noise. Turns out I only had 1 qt of oil left when I checked right after I let the engine cool.

Thanx for all the advice man I just couldnt do much T-shooting due to the 15 degree weather were having in NY. I'll check all the things you mentioned tho.
But I beleive you said rod bearings make the most noise at idle if they are bad and if thats true, the noise on my engine shouldnt be coming from there. Thanx again.

    Benji thanx for the advice

For what it's worth, the one time I heard a top end knock was with an F22B1, and it didn't make noise at idle either, only in the 2.5K-3.5K range. So maybe you should just pull your valve cover and check things out. On the car I'm thinking of there was shredded metal floating around, so it might be pretty obvious.

Did a little more checking today as the weather was at about 32 deg. I pulled the valve cover, pulled on the cam, checked out for metal shred and found nothing. It was pretty much perfect except I never had a feeler gauge to check for valve clearance. With bthe valve cover off I had someone crank just to see if I heard anything but I didnt, maybe it turned to slow to hear anything but regardless there was no noise and all lobes were oiled. I never took off the drive belts and run the engine but there is absolutely no noise coming from the belts or accessories.
I took off the heatshield to check for anything loose, heatshields underneath the car as well made no noise at all and were stiff, nothing was loose. Its definately an internal noise. I hear the most chattering at about 2500 rpm when I hold it steady there, the noise does not go away. The noise goes away at idle and high rpm. The shit is pissing me off because now I have to get into this engine and I hate doing engine work unless Im replacing thing with performance parts. Im gonna do some resaearch on an H22a block matched with my f22b dohc head. Thanks for the help again fellas

Did the valve adjustment to spec today and still hear the same shit. I put my ear closer to the timing sound and now, maybe I never realized before, it sounds like it might be coming from the timing cover. The noise I hear coming from the engine might just be piston slap. Im not totally sure but what the hell in there could possibly make that kinda noise described in the video above. Water pump?? maybe the timing belt is slacked?? Man its so cold outside I just had to come in a say fuck it. But before I came in, I turned theengine counterclockwisea few degrees looking and the crank pulley and tightedned the tensioner, this was withoiut the valve cover off, couldnt see the belt at all, but heard no difference. Anyone ever hear chattering from the timing belt cover??

If you have only 1 quart of oil left after running that Civic while having an oil leak, then that is probably the cause of your problem.

I suspect you are probably running your balance shaft belt? Remember, those are running twice as fast as the crank. Those can starve for oil first. I'd remove the balance shaft belt and retest the engine. See if you notice the issue disappears. I'd leave that belt of for good if so, you'll be fine. I would drain oil, replace with new and new filter.

If it comes to the bearings, to do the job right and have it last you a while. I'd remove the block and rebuild it with atleast new rod bearings. However, to do the job right, you NEED to inspect all related parts for extent of damage and if it is truly repairable or needs to be cleaned/polished. The new bearings should be same as F22ax motor, as they share same crank mains, etc. After bearings are replaced, put in some cheap oil & filter and run it for a few miles, flush it out. Do another oil change and you should be set. Really it is more labor than cost.

Dropping in an H22 block turns this into a hybrid, little things will add up and cause more headaches, as it is now a mix of parts. You would run into future problems. I believe in simplicity and usually costs are kept down if you follow it.

Timeing belt slapping is a totally different sound.

My F22 makes the same sound at the same RPM as yours
Its piston slap man, also known as driving like you stole it.
Put some new oil in it and drive it as slooooow as possible until you can afford to replace it or said parts.
I'd imagine you wore out the sleves and that little trip to the moon just did it in.

Before you get into internals, I would also check that your physical timing is set right still on the Tbelt. I would also check that your ignition timing is correct. If you don't have proper tension on the Tbelt or it has loosened up over time (whole purpose of Honda requiring you to adjust belt tension every so often), then it could have skipped a tooth or more.

I didn't hear the clip, at work, but if it is piston slap, you talking about honing and new piston rings in order. May even need new pistons. At this point, I would perhaps consider the H22 block swap, but definitely do all homework on what is needed to make it work and get everything lined up prior. Still, you would probably get another good condition F22 block for cheap and be fine as well.

Im gonna take off the timing cover also at the bottom and then run the car just to make sure the belt isnt wobbling. I mentioned piston slap earlier by mistake, I used the wrong description. But now that you mention it, the symptoms sound an awful lot like piston slap. I hear the noise when I turn on the car and its cold and also when it accelerates. The only thing that makes me think that it is not piston slap is the sound that it makes. Piston slap makes a hollow bell sound and this sounds totally diff.

So far I checked marks with dizzy rotor, and used a timing lights, its just a lil advanced but I dont think enough to cause detonation. I hope me not running an EGR wont or didnt cause a detonation problem either. I took out my spark plug and it looks carbonish, no build up or anything but the color looks like deposit to me, I'll post a pic up later.

With that said, if it is Piston slap. H22 is going in and this motor will be built slowly. Well lets just hope that my baby is fine. I've grown fond of the f22b, I dont wanna let it go.

If you like the motor that much why don't you just get an f22 block and put the f22b head on it? It'd be real close to the motor you have now, and it's not really a hybrid.

That is definitely something to do with engine internals. I know because that's exactly how my h22 sounded when I first put it in. Took it apart and the bearings were COMPLETELY fucked.

Mine didn't make much noise at idle either and got real loud after 2k if I remember correctly.

Its just that I the concept of just replacing something without upgrading it, if upgradeable just makes no sense to me. The bearings I wont mind replacing to much because if thats the culprit, I just have to drop the oilpan and im in, but takeing a motor out, might as well upgrade, you know, kill two birds. Thanx for the infi though, what you mentioned seems very cost effective.

Damn man, I remember seeing your thread when you got your h22 and took the bearings out. I was holding it in the back of my mind hoping that wasnt my problem. Its hard to find time for me to do these jobs the way my life is going right now. I remember you did all kinda shit after words so I cant remember what you actually did to fix the problem, did you replace the motor or replace bearings, also read something about an f22a crank or rods. Anyway I got stethoscope from sears so Im gonna check again with no belts running and the timing covers off. Hoping for something simple. Thanx man lata

I can understand that, just in case theres any more surprises or was an oil starvation problem you did that preventive maintenance. If I had an h22 I would rebuild it too.

I did it because my bearings were COMPLETLY fucked. There had to be another reason besides skipping oil changes as to why they were like that. My theory was oil starvation from the oil pump. H22 oil pumps breaking isn't a new issue, so I took no chances and replaced it with a known good one.

Hey man, we should start a club. My F22B DOHC just shit the bed today too. Does your H22 source have multiple motors?
