okay so i go and get my car ran throught Marta(emissions testing in tn) i live around nashville and my NO level was 0 but my NO2 was like 4.3 something..i have a bad exhaust leak...going to get my fart can welded up tomoro. could this be causing this ????

NO and NO2? Are you reffering to NOx? High NOx levels are usually caused by clogged EGR ports or a bad cat.

also to add
if your cylinder temp is too high the n0x will come up too. do a quick check on your ignition timing as that will make the nox climb. when it's advanced too far the cylinders get to hot and produce more n0x and don't burn as cleanly hence the purpose of the egr to cool the combustion chamber and slow and control detonation.

your question about the exaust, yes if the leak is before the cat but after it doesn't really make a diff. they might not test it but as far as emmisions go it shouldn't

+1 on the cat. Putting a new cat on can make a world of difference, happened to one of the vehicles we imported and did emissions testing on. Put in a brand new cat, and it was clean as a whistle after that. Also pay attention to your spark plugs, if they are old or corroded, change them.

put two gallons of e85 in your tank and you should pass on problem

E85 actually burns dirtier than regular gasolene.

no it doesnt alcohol burn much cleaner than regular gasoline nox is reduced but CO may rise just a bit. either way e85 is a much cleaner fuel.
