How fast can I safely go in second gear?

Ok, two options: Have the car towed (expensive) or drive the car in 2nd gear home, including about 25 miles of highway. While I don't want to pay for a tow truck, I also don't want to have to pay for a new tranny if I blow it. I know you're not supposed to go that fast in 2nd gear, but I can't start the car in 3rd, and I can't shift once its started... can I safely go about 50 or so the 30 miles home? Or is that going to burn the transmission up. If its safe I'd do that and save some money... otherwise I'll just play it safe and get it towed.

go to uhaul and rent a tow dolly..less than $30-$40 thats what my uncle said..and just hook it up to a truck and tow it home

I thought of that, but I need to find someone with a truck (important part: that has a hitch) and I need this fixed quick. Have lots of friends with trucks, but none with the tow package for one reason or another. Thanks, though, and I'll keep looking.

If you went 50 in 2nd that would be in the 5k range. It would be obnoxiously loud but I don't think it would kill the tranny.

A better question is: why can't you shift?

Why waste the gas? Just get it towed. It would not damage your transmission to drive in 2nd, but it would obviously be harder on the engine since the RPM would be so high.

wont shift into other gears, probably a hydraulic system failure.

                          it's actually not that hard.

in all reality, with our cars, you can just take it out of gear and put some pressure on it into the next gear. it should fall in as soon as it's ready.

for down shifting, pull it out of gear, rev the motor and repeat. it shouldn't grind at all if you put enough pressure.
