There's no telling what this guy did w/ this engine. So the maintainence will happen! I'm not gonna half ass this or anything on my CB7 for that matter. It'll be taken care of for sure.

I'm also going to get a new T stat as well as all new O rings for the water pipe behind the block, o rings for the T stat, coolant outlet pipe, yeah all that was garbage once I opened it up. I thought for sure my engine was TOAST, but the mech. helping me swap it assured me that it can be taken care of w/ a lot of cleaning/hot tanking lol.

He said the piston walls looked extremely good though, no scoring or anything on those.
Tell shop to resurface the head, they will only remove what is necessary to make it true/flat. They can easily hot tank clean it for you as well. Like people mentioned, you could take the block apart and have that cleaned out too or clean it as best possible, run motor for bit and flush out, replace with new fluid. Just be careful that your engine bearing area is all clean and don't introduce any contamination in this block cleaning process. I'd run motor and replace with new motor oil as well.

Does coolant gel up that bad in 2 yrs time? It had to have had some kind of stop leak..
Somebody said that some 'unburped' air in the system could allow huge amounts of oxide to form, but I think this is wrong on two counts:

      1) It won't take long for that air to exit the system and be replaced by coolant via the overflow tank.
      2) Even if it doesn't, the quantity of oxygen in the unburped air will only be enough to form a very small amount of oxide, and after all the oxygen content has been 'trapped' in oxide, oxidation will cease despite oxygen depleted air still being present.

Having said that, if the water jacket has been left open for a long time it could still be that oxygen in air is responsible for build up of aluminium oxide. If a significant quantity of old coolant was still sitting in the bottom of the engine, and the water jacket was open for an extended period, then the internal environment is for a long time going to be very moist with evaporated water, and 'new' oxygen will be able to find it's way into the water jacket each time the air expands with rising ambient temp (displacing some air), then contracts with falling ambient temp ('sucking' some quantity of oxygen laden air back in). All in all an ideal environment for oxides to form...

I think the previous owner put gm dex cool in that motor, and when dex cool and regular coolant mix with in days it turns exactly in too what you have there. The motor most likely was over heated and the water pump probably couldn't flow so it overheated ... I would do exactly what your doing but do the same for the block also. Tear it all down, new bearings, piston rings, (you said the pistons look good ?) gaskets, everything. So basically you would have a new engine in your cb7 ....

I dont think mine was filled with dexcool I doubt they do that in Japan. Anyway I blame my engine for just sitting and oxygen taking over drying up the coolant. Coolant does dry to a somewhat powdery substance. Mine wasnt as bad as his but there was a noticeable layer but still the passages were open enough to allow me to run a flush through.

i agree, seen this many many times. toyota uses a simiar product to dexcool as does some newer mazdas so i wouldn't rule this out. either way a screw driver and a shop vac are the norm to clean it up. unless your down to give the engine a freshing up and disassemble. might find some more collateral damage or cause some with that kind of corrosion

well the system wasn't completely sealed either. The car was involved in a front end accident so the rad. broke and the engine killed since the batt. ruptured in the accident, the guy assured me that the engine didn't overheat though, since the batt. kinda broke. It sat w/ no rad and upper and lower hoses disconnected. But inspecting the HG, it doesn't look like there's any sign of leakage, or any white crusty coolant remnants coating it. So I feel that it didn't overheat. I'll find out later in the week if the head needs any work.
