I wonder if your thinking of the metallic pads. The metallic pads are good for breaking, but THOSE are harsh on stock rotors.
From past experience, and the words of the more experienced, i have found ceramic to be O.K. on rotors.
I personally have been running them for two years on stock replacement rotors, and still LOVE them.
I believe they are bendix ceramics. 35 bucks and worth every penny. ALSO, i love the fact that i don't have to clean my wheels every other day from brake dust.
