    Judging by the picture, you have a manual and it's the thing that allows you to shift. You can unscrew it safely and just toss it away a little. There's no need to remove it or anything.

    I think you and me were planning to replace it almost at the same time. I don't know if you read my Non functional speedometer thread but that's what it was about. My old one stopped working and my new was faulty as well. How unlucky can I be. I bought a cluster thinking it was the problem because I didn't want to believe that both speed sensors are faulty especially one that's new. I took my dash apart, looked for broken wires. I spent at least 3 weekends on that one problem.

        woot - with the help of Gyuri87, I got the shifter thing out of the way, and got the VSS replaced in about 45 minutes this morning, including a test drive.

            As an alternate idea, would a crowsfoot extension reach in there I wonder?
