    timing disaster

so i finally got to fixing my car.

As I was driving a few months ago, I suddenly heard a huge 'clunk clunk clunk' noise coming from the engine. About 2 seconds later, my car shut off and I could see a trail of coolant and oil in my rear view mirror. Unfortunately, I was going down a hill and since my motor was shut off...my brakes barely engaged and steering was pretty difficult.

Well, I finally diagnosed the problem today. I noticed that much of the coolant leaked from the drivers side, particularly coming from the pulley/belt area. Initially, I thought that I had broken a timing belt. I pulled the timing cover and discovered that the belt was still intact. I stumped for weeks. Then just today, I tried to rotate the crank pulley. It rotated but the funny thing was....my cam gear didn't budge. I looked down towards the water pump and discovered that its gear had fallen right off of the housing! My theory was that is fell off and got wedged into the small area between the timing cover and the block, thus causing the belt to slip. I verified this by cutting the timing belt and pulling it out. Low and behold, the teeth on the bottom of the timing belt were completely smoothed out.

My timing is completely off....what a headache...now I'll have to realign and do a complete timing belt/water pump overhaul.

Yea, water pump/timing belt changes every 100K miles and I haven't had any problems like this. Also, use OEM components. Live & learn. Such a nice car for this to happen to.

I would assume so yeah...I'll find out as soon as I take off the crankshaft pulley. I'm waiting for the tool to arrive in the mail

My valves are ok. I actually got a full OEM valve cover gasket kit including the lower spark plug seals.

Funny thing is...I believe my timing belt/water pump was changed about 70k ago. This is terrible. Luckily, I have a second car to drive while I get this fixed. The great thing is...this gives me an opportunity to fix up a whole bunch of things.

So far, I'm about 50 percent done on the wire tuck. I'm looking at doing a complete ABS removal as well as pulling the motor and painting the engine bay. Wish me luck
