so i finally got to fixing my car.
As I was driving a few months ago, I suddenly heard a huge 'clunk clunk clunk' noise coming from the engine. About 2 seconds later, my car shut off and I could see a trail of coolant and oil in my rear view mirror. Unfortunately, I was going down a hill and since my motor was shut off...my brakes barely engaged and steering was pretty difficult.
Well, I finally diagnosed the problem today. I noticed that much of the coolant leaked from the drivers side, particularly coming from the pulley/belt area. Initially, I thought that I had broken a timing belt. I pulled the timing cover and discovered that the belt was still intact. I stumped for weeks. Then just today, I tried to rotate the crank pulley. It rotated but the funny thing was....my cam gear didn't budge. I looked down towards the water pump and discovered that its gear had fallen right off of the housing! My theory was that is fell off and got wedged into the small area between the timing cover and the block, thus causing the belt to slip. I verified this by cutting the timing belt and pulling it out. Low and behold, the teeth on the bottom of the timing belt were completely smoothed out.
My timing is completely off....what a headache...now I'll have to realign and do a complete timing belt/water pump overhaul.
