H22A swap in progress...was sold bad trans

My H22 is in my car. I bought a 99 H22 trans from my friend's friend. I just found out 5th gear is bad. REALLY BAD. It will not go in. The guy I bought it from claims he didnt know it had a bad 5th gear.

    Details about purchase deal:
    1. He said that there was nothing wrong with the trans.
    2. $350 included trans, clutch, flywheel.

The transmission is in my car now and I discovered this problem when i tried to pop it into 5th gear after I bled my clutch.

    I can:
    1. not buy the trans and get my money back.
    2. ask for a discount on the trans.
    3. ask him to pay for fixing the trans.

try to have him refund your 50% money into having it fixed or try fixing it youirself or cop another 1 at the junkyard. But try to really find out the cause becuase fifth rarely goes bad more like third but not fifth

Could it be not enough oil in the trans? or maybe the shift linkage is not pulling/pushing correctly?

Maybe it's alot of abusive driving?

One of my friends suggested to pull the 5th gear out of my F22's tranny and put it in there. It would be great for gas mileage, especially for freeway driving.

well what i would do before i take it apart is

1 change the oil get some synchromesh and put it in there
2 dont take it apart that gearing shit is complicated
3 check and make sure the shiftlinkages arent blocked or messed up
4 when changing the fluid make sure you drain the bottom plug then when refilling that back up make sure it comes out of the top when your pouring it in that means its full when it starts to overflow fromt he top.
5 Ive heard of a similar incident like this my boy had problems it was a faulty spring inside his clutch that went and the spring was caught preventing him from shifting. Did you change the clutch and resurface the flywheel before you did all of this?

When you said he couldnt shift...do you mean he couldnt shift into all gears or just one gear.

Right now I can shift it into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and reverse. 5th gear will not go in and it grinds hard when you try to force it in.

Shift linkages are your first thing to check. If they aren't working correctly, then you could be going into 5th with the gears partially engaged (which would make them grind).

Have you ever experienced bad synchronizers? That could be the case too, though I've never heard of 5th gear synchros going bad... It's usually 1-3 that go. Like sparkle said, synchromesh could be a good thing to try. Not a permanent fix, but it will help.

If you want to take the tranny apart, I would suggest having a pro do it. If things are wrong, and you have no experience with it, will you really know what you are doing? I've taken parts off my car without knowing what I was looking at, and I've been totally lost

Finally, don't ship the thing back... You'll lose too much money just sending it! Asking for a discount could be a good idea, but that's it.

Actually...the person who sold it to me lives in the same town. I will talk to him about it and see where he wants to take this. It's so hard finding an H22 Tranny, especially when you're on a budget.

What about your F22 tranny? Longer gears aren't as good for acceleration off the line, but it's still good. And if you ever plan on boosting, it's better. Contrary to what many people think, the F22 tranny is plenty strong enough to handle the power.

Yes...I believe it will handle the H22...but many people who have the swap done and use the H23 or F22 tranny dont like it. When shifting from redline to the next gear, it falls below VTEC. Needless to say...I would like to stay within VTEC between gears.

Get a chipped P28 with a program that removes the rev limiter I wouldn't necessarily advise it, but that's always an option... The P28 is great for tuning anyway.

I dont want to kill my engine...I'm keeping it stock. I want my car to be reliable with balls. I want to do things the right way the first time so I dont have to go back and fix it later on.

The best compliment to that engine is the H22 tranny.
