it would be much easier to use the entire harness from the donor vehicle as far as i know and it would probably be a lot quicker too. too bad i ran out of time this summer and am going to college so if im going to do this its gonna happen next summer, but its ok because more planning time.

WOW I just spent an hour reading this whole thread.
It seems like you guys got most of the biggies figured out.
I think it's going to come down to the first person with an empty engine bay and J series sitting next to the car will be able to offer some info, take measurements and/or do this swap.
Not that I'm planning this swap, but if I were to do it, I'd use a different tranny and go RWD. It would give more room under the hood, help with balance, and RWD is more fun. Of course this adds more thing to figure out and more fabrication, but that's what I would do.
I expect a member from this site to do this swap eventually. If I'm anywhere close to where the work is done, I offer my services and tools for free to help out. I've wired engines from scratch, made mounts, made parts, and so on so I know I could help with something like this.
Good luck and props to whoever tries this first.

RWD would be very difficult to do. It was considered by some people a while back in regaurds to the 4wd jdm wagons that where around a while ago, but it was pointed out that there would be little to no room for the longshaft to go to the back axle. Possible? Yes. Worth it? You decide To me it wouldn't be worth it.

Yes, but I was also strongly considering cutting the crap out of one of my coupes to do a mid-engine RWD setup not too long ago.
I was thinking for this, re-shape the firewall and "exhaust hump" in the center to fit the trans and driveshaft. It wouldn't be too big of a deal to grab the full rear from a car with a similar wheelbase. I'd prefer to keep it independent sus. so I was thinking something like a 2nd gen. RX-7. Going RWD would add more custom fabrication like the firewall reshaping, gas tank, and making a trans mount, but it would eliminate other fabrication like shift cables, axles, 2 less engine mounts, no front sus./knuckle changes, no front frame reinforcement and so on. I think the difficulty and cost would be about the same.....it just depends on what you want.Last edited by ACCLUDE91; 10-07-2007, 12:46 AM.

Since reading this thread I can't stop thinking about doing this swap. I'm not making any promises, but I recently signed up for the military and I'm getting a very nice sign-on bonus and decent regular checks so it *may* be doable for me within the next year or so. I won't have may reservations throwing $10k at a CB. The Army also has a project shop where you can rent a bay to do your own projects so I would have a place to do the work and access to plenty of tools in addition to my own. Again, no promises, but I'm strongly considering doing this or something like it within the next year. Thanks to everyone for getting the idea rolling and posting all the info in this thread so far.
