JDM H22A smog legal?

    That and a lot of luck, apparently. I should be going back to the ref next week if my injectors come in this week and I'll ask him what the deal is with JDM motors. Get it right from the source, so to speak. I have a USDM motor and the visual is already passed, so I just need to get past the sniffer...

          OK, direct from the CA smog referee...

          The laws have recently been relaxed so that JDM motors are now smog legal in CA as long as there is a US counterpart... ie. JDM H22A=US H22Ax, JDM F22A=US F22Ax, I asked specifically about the ZC (for my 89 Civic) and he said that they match that up to the D16A1 which came in the 86-89 Integra, so it is smoggable in an 89 or older car (perfect for my 89 Civic), but the US emissions equipment needs to be connected... EGR, charcoal canister and such. I'm not sure what the US counterpart for the F22B or F20B are, but there is probably something close enough to get it passed. Initially, the law stated, in no uncertain terms, that for a CA vehicle to be smoggable with other than the original engine, it HAD to have a motor from a vehicle that was originally destined for sale in CA. That is what I was referring to when I originally posted my response to this thread.

          I stand (sit) corrected. Now go out and put your JDM motors in your CB7s!

              yea ive been wondering about this i have to take my car and i have the f22b dohc. i wonder if anyone has passed. i was gonna stick my stock ecu in from the f22a1 and see if i can pass like that.

                  wow if that's true then im good to go! JDM F22B = USDM H23A1

                  I just recently found out that since i need new base stickers, my PA car has to pass CA smog (fuck the govn't!) ... so now im not so worried about it with my pending swap...


                  one question tho: are there two different smog certifications in CA? Security here on base says "dont get the certificate, just get the test since you are out of state" what the hell does that mean?

                    Yes, it is true! This came from the referee that has been testing my car. As far as "Just get the test", when you take the smog test, you have to pay for the test (price can vary greatly, as there is nothing that tells them how much they can charge), then it's another $8.25 to get the certificate so you can register your car. When you go to the referee, you pay for the test and when/if it passes, you pay for the certificate ($8.25) and he also affixes a BAR label so that any smog test center can certify it after that. If your swap runs clean enough and you don't actually need to register it in the state, I would just take it to a smog test center and have them test it (most of them won't even realize that it's not the right motor) and give you the test results so you can take them to the base. I don' tthink they even need to transmit the results to the state...

                      So where is this cool ref guy? I've failed visual on my jdm automatic h22a swap but my swap is very clean looking and was professionally installed by Blacktrax. I took my car to openloop in frisco and they supposingly knew a ref that was easy going.....but just my luck he didn't work at the station anymore and this new ref checked my car out. He compared a prelude manual with a accord manual and found things to be very different and thought I had tampered emissions equipment which was bull$hiet!! Everything is in correct working order and I was still running the jdm p13ecu (he didn't know the difference between the us or jdm p13 and he even went ahead and took my floor plate off to check) My car passed clean too but he failed me probably just to be an ass because of the argument the openloop mechanic got into with him.

                      It's funny I even see a CB7 on e-bay right now that has a auto h22a swap thats legalized..... I'm due for smog next year and i'm afraid if i can't do a manual swap by then....my car might be sitting. I heard skyline college has a ref station with techs just learning etc. so I might try to take my car there for a second b.a.r attempt.

                        The referee that I am dealing with is in Modesto at the junior college. He's a cool guy. He even tested my car twice the last 2 visits just to make sure the cat was hot enough... THe laws might have changed in the last year or so, so that could be the difference for you. Good luck!

                        Is there any USDM honda that has an H22 with an automatic? I heard the autos were next to impossible to get. Anyway, I like the 5spd now. hehe

                          The JDM motors don't usually pass, mine failed miserably. I just wrote up a reciept from the shop saying I spent like $600 in parts and got a waiver to pass the test.

                          Ohio is doing away with emmissions, but by then I'll have Florida plates which they don't have them here either.

                            Dr Love got his JDM H22 passed without any problems. Of course he din't go to the ref, just a smog station, but they didn't notice that it wasn't stock DOH! They could lose their smog license for that, but I won't tell... I think it's kind of a crap shoot whether it will pass or not. I mean, I got a USDM motor thinking that it would be easier to smog, and look at me. 4 visits to the ref and I still can't get the darned thing to pass the sniffer test. Now I'm gonna change the injectors (if I can finally get a set of Venoms that work) and change the O2 sensor with a Honda OEM one from Majestic Honda. It's the expensive route, but if it works, it's worth it to me. I HATE just looking at the car in the garage! I wanna DRIVE the beeotch! <apologizing to the CB7 for calling her names> But, honestly, I would never go back to the F22 Auto unless I buy a 2nd CB7 (EX this time for the moonroof) as a backup vehicle and keep the H Accord for the weekends

                              thanks for the clarification, that makes a lot more sense then how the wierdo at security told me - i'm not swapping until after i get the stickers,which will be good for 4 years hopefully, and once i get the stickers, i'm gonna treat her like a Pennsylvania car again...

                              ...i really hope my stock engine passes without incident.
