    Smog

    Could someone help me with smog issues in California. I'm trying to install a jdm h22 and get it smog legalized. Could someone tell me what parts I need to install from my 90 accord? And what would I have to do so it will pass the state referee, emission wise. I'm pretty new at this and I'm doing the swap myself, everything seems to be pretty straight forward. If anyone has the time please tell me what to do. Thanks

    First of all, I would recommend using a USDM motor for the swap! Maybe a bit more expensive, but you'll spend the extra $$ trying to get it past CA smog. I just got my swap finished (USDM H22A1/5 Spd) and once I get rid of the cel 12 (EGR) problem, I'm gonna head over to the ref and see what he says about getting it done. I'll let you all know what happens...

          Got rid of the cel (guy that did the work switched A6 and A11 on the ECU (only need to do that on 5th gen accords)). Have an appt on Monday with the ref...

              I really need this list of parts when you are done and legit with the Cali smog crap. I hate our emmissions crap out here. Damn liberal green party! Screw us all the time!

                I'm not sure what you mean by "List of parts", but here's what I have

                USDM H22A1/M2F4
                I used the Accord wire harness modified to plug into the H22
                F22 fuel rail
                F22 EGR valve
                Accord EGR box (on the firewall. contains egr solenoid, MAP sensor and such)
                Greddy header (with CARB number affixed to the primary so it can be seen)
                AEM CAI (again with CARB number affixed so that it is visible)
                If you cut the CAI to install an air bypass valve like I did, you'll need the CARB sticker that came with the ABV affixed to the CAI below the ABV (on the filter side)
                I also installed a fitting for the cold start valve so I could plug the line into the intake
                The ref is going to look for E.O. (CARB) numbers for everything that isn't factory, and the guy I went to had me take down the ECU so he could verify that it was a P13 (P13 is stamped on the motor) and he had me open the "black box" on the firewall so he could verify the location of the MAP sensor, EGR control solenoid and make sure that everything is connected properly.

                Then he hooked it up to the sniffer and it failed. All told, it took about an hour and a half for the first appt.

                Since then, I've replaced the entire exhaust system, including the cat (hi NOx was probably caused by the cat) and I'm running injector cleaner through the system (BG44k, $28 a can!). Once I run this tank of gas through, I'll call for another appt to see if it will pass the sniffer test.

                  good thing i work for a test only smog shop here in cali, when i get my jdm h22, my boss will help me out with gettin it passed

                    Trust me, you'll be better off in the long run if you get a USDM motor. From what I understand, the only way to get a JDM motor past CA smog is to BUY the cert (illegal, and the smog guy will lose his license and you will lose your car. Personally, I didn;t want to take the chance. Only $500 more for a USDM motor and a LOT fewer headaches!

                      If I get the jdm motor and get a usdm p13 ecu, would I be able to pass it through emissions? or is the ecu different from one another?

                        i thought you would have to put ALL USDM intake and exhaust parts on the JDM motor in order to "convert" it.

                        so essenitially, it would be pretty much a USDM with all the USDM parts...expensive but then you would have a lower mileage motor.

                        take the black box apart sine the lude's didnt have those. the reason would be because you are running smog for a prelude and not an accord.

                          Good luck with that! I would recommend getting a usdm motor as well. I failed visual even though I had all the accord usdm parts converted over to the prelude block. The reason why I failed was because my car i automatic and v-tec preludes here were never automatic. The ref had no idea what he was looking at and literally compared a accord and prelude book and saw my rear motor mount solenoid and failed me because he claimed i was "messing with emissions equipment" Funny...if i tampered with my emissions equipment how come my motor passed so damn clean??

                          He claimed that part was a purge valve and failed me. If i took that part off I probably would've past since he didn't even know I was still running the JDM p13 ecu. He actually pulled the damn thing out too! lol. I'm gonna try to get it to pass bar when my time comes around again. By that time I'm gonna hope to be converted to a 5speed and just throw in the usdm p13.

                          There isn't really a difference in the usdm or jdm ecu's. JDM's run more richer and it's possible to still pass smog with them but that all depends on what else u have on ur car. To pass more clean u should just use the usdm ecu.

                          This is what I recommend if you do decide on using the jdm block anyways,
                          on jdm blocks on the intake manifold, there is no air bypass valve. You need to take off the jdm blockoff plate and re-use ur accord or find a prelude valve and swap it over. Also there is a a missing line on the jdm manifold that needs to run to your blackbox. I ran a fake line.... and the ref didn't notice this at all but it will be easier just swapping a whole entire usdm prelude intake manifold to save troubles....

                          I also recommend getting a carb legal intake made for your year motor. My dumbass didnt' think about it and bought a 97up CAI because I wanted to make sure I was getting the big intake piping since e-bay list prelude intakes for 92-96 sohc dohc v-tec almost the same and i didn't want the smaller F-piping. Since that was the case, I had to buy a prelude v-tec stock intake hose and modified it to fit my accord airfilter box.

                          California sucks elephantitis ballz.
