I am currently trying to get my car smoged in northern california: I have a jdm h22 in a 92 accord. you will have several problems when going to the smog ref. the 2ndarys must be hooked up and working, a usmd ecu, the accord "black box"on emissions cannot be used, a prelude counterpart must be supplyed, stock header and intake, and if using a aftermarket flywheel one must get the flywheel staticly timed to make use of proper timing marks on flywheel. With my set up I currently pass emmisions but fail the visuial inspection due to the use of the accord "black box" emishion box. I think its a bunch of bullshit!!!!!!!!!!!! :thumbsdow

The black box is what has ur map sensor and 2 other sensors, but the prelude dosn't have a black box- so what your have to do is take apart the blacks box and mount all the sensors on the firewall- its a bunch of bull shit but I thinik that's pretty much the only way to do it- if somone can prove me wrong please do so!
The reason for having to get the flywheel staticly timed, is because it is not stock, and the smog rep has no way to check if the timing marks on the flywheel (tdc) are correct.

Yeah I don't get that. Do you have to have some sort of proof that you had the sucker statically timed? Even so, is it really that easy to tell an aftermarket from a stock flywheel without pulling off the tranny? Granted its not an issue for me since I just had the stock one resurfaced but that does seem like a bunch of bs.
As for the "black box", you can just pull off the plastic and the acutal sensors and what not will still be mounted to the same bracket. That should make the ref happy so he can see what all is hooked up where.
My friend, who is a smog tech, doesn't see why you can't just bring the factory service manual with you to show him what's in it. I suppose the only way to really prove it would be to open it up though.
And naturally, don't forget that the intake/header you run have to have the proper CARB stickers on them
Finally, some refs will care about the engine code, some won't.

you can see the flywheel if you remove the rubber mount used for checking ignition timing. Even though I am running a clutchmaster flywheel and and exedy clutch I still have to get it timed-its hella ***
I went to honda and got a printout that said that the sensors in the black box were exactly the same as the ones on the prelude and he still wouldn't pass me because it was visually the same. its reduculas (sp?)
but I never had a problem with the engine code as long as it has all smog equipment-good to go!
good luck with the smog rep...both of you

dude you need to not give advice if you havent dropped a tranny. Yes you can see the flywheel through the little timing hole because the starter has to turn it, so there for the clutch does NOT cover it. the flywheel is bigger then the clutch and it is sandwhiched in between the clutch and the block.
you must have an auto or something.H22 Prelude VTEC 92-96 200 161 10.6:1 87 90 DOHC VTEC 2157 JDM
