    Continuing Brake Woes

    Hi all-

1992 EX Coupe in remarkably clean shape with no rust(from California). I am having a number of mechanical things pop up at once regarding brakes, suspension and steering(adressed in anoth thread Suspenion/Steering Issues).
    This is for Brakes only.

I bought this thing with 152K July 04. By December I was replacing pads in front as they were worn. Checked rear, and pad life was fine. All winter and spring I was having issues with warped front rotors and burning smell. My fronts were wicked HOT. I was riding on steelies and Snows then also.

In May- I found a set of Acura CL knuckles and proceeded to do the swap(myself). Bought new $20 pads and no-name rotors, and then checked rears. Hmm- they haven't seemed to move. Tore them down, as slider pins were frozen, and turned pistons back- which was extemely tough. I also noticed that my bleed screws(all 4) were plugged with some kinda junk. Freed up the rears, and though okay- good to go. I also replaced the pads in rear.

By September- my fronts were warped badly again. I turned em, and the guy said they were glazed pretty badly- although I can't remember if he said only one side was glazed. I double checked the front sliders and piston movement, and all seems fine.

Fast foreward to December- since early DEC- my fronts are badly warped again. I expected them to warp eventually since they were cut down, but not this $%^&*( fast.

What I want to do is replaced my front caliper brackets AND calipers, new pads AND rotors and go from there. Or do I really want to do that????

I also notice(I occasionally feel front and rears after getting home or work) that my fronts are real hot, but my backs are only luke-warm. I asked here in an earlier thread(when I did my swaps)- and folks said the rears don't really do much. Obviously I need new front pads and rotors now, but before I spend the bux on front caliper pads and brackets- should I replace the rears first???? There is some braking going on in rear, as the rotors back there do appear clean and slightly shiney.

The only thing that sucks about all this, is that its now January, and living in Mass- its damn cold. I know I gotta pull the rears to at least SEE how tough it is to turn back the pistons and check the sliders.

How do I get the parking brake lines off the calipers?

Oh- I am all Nissin calipers on all 4 wheels.

I have been doing brakes on my cars for over 25 years, and I have never seen something like this.

    Help please with the suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Could it be the master cylinder or the brake lines? I dont know too much about brakes but its just throwing some things out there for you to check.

sucks how all the problems rear their heads at once.

It seems to me that for whatever reason the rear pads are not holding up their end of the deal. True, they dont do too much, but they are there for a reason. Seems like they are getting stuck, have you tried pushing down on the pedal to and get someone to check if the calipers are even moving back there? are the either front/rear dragging? parking brake dragging?

no name rotors- definately a no-no on these cars man, youve got to upgrade to something brand name on the front, you dont want to be replacing these things every year with the amount of work involved. The better metal has better heat dissipating qualities. maching does nothing. replace the rotors and pads all 4 with something of higher quality, start from there.

                Thanks for the replies all-

I drove car to work this AM, and again did a check of rotor heat on all 4 wheels. Fronts were WAY hot, while rears weren't even warm.

I think my REAL culprit is the rear calipers and/or the slider pins. ALthough someone mentioned proportioning valve- is there one for 4 wheel disc cars? Where is it?

I know it sux to be outside now- but my first order is check movement of rear calipers and sliders. Replace front pads and rotors(I usually use Raybestos Rotors for ALL my vehicles). Instead of concentrating on front calipers and pins- I really think the rears have gotta go!!!

When I had the rears apart during summer- I could find an intuitive way to remove parking brake lines from these things. I could see thee was some sort of an enclosure that kinda kept road spray away from some areas of caliper, but even that wasn't real accessable.

Yah- the money situation sux, and I will need all new struts as well, and prolly springs while in there- it appears I am getting hammered at once.

                She is worth keeping though-

Just how hot are your front wheels getting?

as a baseline, when i was breaking in my new breaks, I could still touch the wheel without getting burnt.

maybe something is dragging? does your car roll from a start?

I think ebay is your best bet for aftermarket shocks, and honda-tech had a great deal on rotors+pads for 280 shipped.

                    Hi Starch-

Car rolls off the line, and my fronts will burn me good. The rears- I can leave my hand on and won't even warm me. Realy sounds like my backs are stuck open.

                      Just an update...

I re-used my stocker Honda OEM pads(they were replaced two months ago when rotors were turned). I bought Raybestos PG rotors(unlike the no-name stuff the last time)@$62 each YIKES(Acura CL 2.3's).

On pulling the right side...I found one slider pin that was REAL sticky and stiff. This one has been a bit suspect over the last couple of times I've pulled them apart. It moves- but nowhere near as free as the others. I've cleaned out the bracket holes and relubed them using something new the part shop gave me. This guy knows the issues I've been having, and he even turned my rotors the last time for free. He even knew I was going to Honda for pads.

Drives side front all seemed fine and normal. I only looked at drives side REAR- not right side. Both sliders there seemed to move freely, and the piston was bitch to turn back in without anything to hold the caliper in place.

I checked rotors again this morning after my commute. Does not seem to be any change in temps. Back were only slghtly above cold, while I would still burn my finger on the front.

I also marked my old front rotors and will take them down to parts shop to check runout on each- I suspect right side should be worse based on slider pin issue.

I will check again in a couple of weeks for the right side pin/caliper bracket. Anyone got a good source for 22T bracket and pins??? HOnda OEM was huge money for a bracket.

I also will probably just replace the rear calipers. I found a place selling the rears for $65 each with life warranty, and they are Cardones. Most places I had checked wanted $100 and up each side.

                      Chris

Anyone got a line on Front Caliper Brackets(22t's??)? Me think my Right side is hangin up for one piece, and then do the rear calipers.

Problem is- I can't find the Caliper Bracket number or price on the Majestic website. I looked in the Front Brakes section, and see the Bracket, but its not listed in the Parts section under it. Seems to be the only piece without a number.

I don't believe these are available aftermarket either!

                        Thx

Looks like it's only available with the caliper.

                          I'd give a parts breaker a call.

I'd be afraid of what a Wrecker would have... depending on age, etc.

It's a solid chunk of cast iron.
What issue is it giving you?
