    Brake Options

It's nearly time to upgrade my current brake setup (OEM rotors and Hawk HPS pads) with something a bit more performance minded but daily friendly. Just was curious what others are running that might give a bit better braking force and yet not be entirely harsh for a daily driver. Thanks for any input.

are you looking for larger rotors and calipers?

or just a brake pad and rotor quality upgrade?

Either as I am open to the thought of more braking force. I know there are options for a bigger brake setups and for just better rotors/pads/lines. Just curious what others have found in their setups and if they feel that it's worth the upgrade. Thanks.

I think a new set of slotted rotors and EBC green stuff pads would give you a lot more stopping power. Very cost effective, too. If you have rear drums, do a disc conversion.

              Thanks for moving the thread.

Yeah, basically gonna go with StopTech slotted rotors, Hawk HPS pads and Goodridge SS lines. My guy at the local parts shop said that he can do everything for just over $400. I felt that it's a decent start and it should give me a much firmer brake setup. Anyone running this setup or anything close to it?

Can you lock your brakes with your current setup?

If so, don't bother upgrading over what you have. Upgrade your tires. If you then find you cannot lock your brakes, then focus on that.

You cannot improve street brakes if you can already lock the wheels. You may be able to change brake feel, but you cannot improve brake performance. Something like stainless lines will give you a firmer feeling pedal but will not improve performance. Your brakes will feel stronger, and thus feel better, but in actual numbers, brake stopping distances will remain unchanged.

Obviously if you see any heavy Auto-X and or track time (which more than 98% of our members won't see), then yes, a brake upgrade makes sense because you're trying to control brake fade.

Yes I can lock my brakes but I have wanted to find a more responsive brake setup. I do agree that a good set of tires are vital to stopping also. Earlier this year I added some Enkei RPF1 and some Yokohama S Drive tires. I know from previous builds and competing in various autocross competitions that tires and brakes do win events. It's why I have added what I have to my car as I do intend to improve it so that if I ever decide to compete again, that I'll have a working setup that will at least be fun to drive. Thanks for your input.

A more responsive brake setup. As in a hard initial bite and then the harder you press, the more it brakes without plateauing?

Have you tried a more aggressive compound?

Yeah I've tried a few different sets of pads over the last two years and have found that for my driving style and for what I had that the Hawk HPS pads were the best. I tried the Hawk HP+ pads, Hawk ceramic pads, Akebono ProACT pads and just OEM spec Raybestos pads. My new setup was installed this past weekend and I'm in the final bit of the break in period. From what I have felt and seen, I can definately brake much later into corners and it's a good reliable daily friendly setup. With having added larger diameter wheels (16s) and summer tires (Yokohama S Drives) it definately now stops and handles much better then with my previous setup.
