    substitue for spring compressor?

i was wondering instead of me buying a spring compressor can i just use my dremel and cut the the stock springs piece by piece until it is loose?

just borrow one for free from an auto place like auto zone...cutting them will still make them pop out and you could still get hurt

i apologize for what i'm about to suggest. this method is very unconventional and VERY VERY unsafe. you have been warned!

you don't need the compressors if you are installing aftermarket springs. you can just "shoot" the stock springs out of the shocks. just place the bottom side of the shock/spring against a tire and unscrew the perch nut CAREFULLY. it will shoot out depending on how you are bracing the perch so be careful not to loose any parts or any body parts as well. it's best to do this in the grass to minimize the force of the spring. stand away from the perch as you unscrew.

REMINDER: i am not responsible for your actions. do this at your own risk.

OR you can just rent one just like arrozburner stated. it's free!

thats the way i do it timmy.. fucking works all the time except i do it differently
i wrap the assembly in an old towel.. fairly good (not loose).. then using double wrench action i release the top nut while stepping on the shock body. meh.. its scary as fuck at times but it never fails and beats using a spring compressor

Id rent one for free man, its not like the springs are soft metal, its some hard shit and youll probably be going through tons of dremel discs?

I rented one, but truthfully you don't need one if you're careful. When you take the assembly out of the wheel well, have someone step on the end with the fork while you work on the shaft bolt FACING AWAY FROM YOU on the floor. Take the bolt off...if you go slowly it shouldn't shoot away like a bullet; mine stayed on somewhat. Basically, as long as you're not taking the assembly apart as it faces your body I don't think you need a compressor.

interestingly, the stock spring comes off more violently than aftermarket springs.

in any event, the best thing to use is a wall mount compressor, as it's the easiest and quickest to use.

if not that, then the one you can rent for free/refundable deposit from napa autoparts, autozone, etc. etc.

as only a last emergency resort would i do what timmy, wikked, and others have suggested.

Lay it in the grass of your back yard, step on the cap end with the nut and just take the nut off the top using an impact. BOING and the assembly shoots a whopping 2 or 3 inches away from your foot and the nut is still in the socket on the impact. Big deal.

yea thats what we did when me and my friend put my springs and struts in last weekend...if ya use the grass things dont go very far. but whatever you do DO NOT try cutting the spring...it could fly off and hurt you pretty bad

make sure you step on the spring and the strut. When you use an impact gun it flies like 2-3 inches. The first time I lowered my car we did it all with hand tools and some of those top hats shot a good 20 feet. So be careful if you don't get a spring compressor.

Yeah, i would just be careful. Rear ones wont do much, and you can press down on them enough to compress it enough to take the nuts off. the fronts are the ones that I wouldnt suggest unless you have an impact to do it quick... since its gonna shoot and may shoot hard depending on how much your stock ones settled.

just undo the nut while the car is sitting , take off the top and shit then rais the car and undo the rest the car should act as a spring compressor
