I think its worth mentioning that there is a huge difference between SLAMMING a car out and a mild drop. You can easily do a mild 1" or so drop on even cheap crap ebay coilovers, ride quality will be just fine and OEM struts will not neccessarily blow out unless they are about ready to go anyway. Yeah....if you throw on some coilovers, snatch the bumpstops and crank the collars all the way down it will bounce like crazy and kill the oem struts but for 1-2" of drop all it will do is stiffen the ride a bit ( as it should ). Yeah you might get a little bit of bounce but with a mild drop the OEM struts are working a little harder and will reduce this a good bit along with the stiff springs that come with the cheapo setups. Using all supplied parts correctly, the sleeves with the rubber spacers to keep them firmly in place on the strut, the allens to help as well, lock the collars in place and you will have something solid that will work just fine.

Best case scenario for the CHEAP.....ebay coilovers with new or low mile OEM struts, 1"....( MAYBE 2" MAX ) drop and I would put money on the struts lasting for years with no problems.

No im not SUGGESTING this setup but everyone on here is screaming the extreme end of using ebay coilovers...there is the MUCH lower side to this arguement that does not impact the suspension near as much but can still make a car look much better than stock ride height, especially if you toss on a set of low pro tires which will add another 1" or so to your drop.

That still doesn't take into consideration the tuning of the OEM struts. They aren't made to handle a stiffer spring rate (in fact, most of the cheap "performance" struts are only good for about 15% stiffer than stock.) Any cheap "ebay" spring is going to be MUCH higher than that! Having the shocks and springs improperly paired will cause unpredictable handling, and will increase wear on the shocks.

      Can it be done? Yes.
Can you avoid being a baby-daddy if you pull out in time? Sure. Maybe.

In both cases, the cost of doing it right is not THAT much greater than the cost of doing it wrong... and FAR less than the cost of the consequences of having your cheap plan fail on you!

This thread is full of so much fail and so much win.

I want my CB slammed. I'm broke. Could I buy $100 coilover sleeves from Megan Racing and do it? Yup. Am I going to? Nope. Spending $100 now and say $700 later for some F&F Type 1s means that if I would have kept saving the whole time I could afford F&F Type IIs.

That's not even taking into account the fact that I could die/kill someone in that period of time between.

people should stop using the term "coilover" when they're talking about coilover sleeves.

coilovers usually cost more than $600 by at least 4.
im about to spend over a grand on coils for my 240. and they're not even priced that bad.

people need to stop being dumb, and quit bitching about wanting to drop their car on a budget. i did that and fucked shit up. then spent $1200 and found out what "doing it right" feels like.

            never going back.

My car is stock height, and I don't think it looks stupid I thought it did at first, but I've learned to love it since I want to do my suspension once the way I really want it

I think slammed cars look broken, personally. I prefer stock height!
My CB7 is on H&R Race springs, and it's actually too low for me. I want to put it back on some H&R Sport springs. That was a very nice height for me.
I remember when I picked up my 92 DX project car... the one that I crashed. I LOVED being stock height again! It was so comfortable.

Someone should figure out the ride height at which roll centre migration on the CB becomes outrageous, so then we can numerically quantify what is "too low".....

I'm going to have to do some extensive research on suspension stuff... right now, you're the most knowledgeable person that actively posts about it on here. We need more people with in-depth knowledge!

It's sad, most people view lowering a car as nothing more than a cosmetic enhancement. Worse yet, many of the parts manufacturers seem to view it the same way! Unfortunately, lowering a car the wrong way can make it extremely unsafe. Performance will also be degraded with an improper suspension setup.

I'm going to do some shopping for books... and then finding some useful websites with real information. We have the big dogs like Bisimoto and Collective Racing taking care of the engine performance research, and cosmetic enhancements are all a matter of personal taste. The next big area would be suspension, and the knowledge base in that area is severely lacking in this community!

edit: When we get to the suspension part of crx08's cb7 turbo sedan build, hopefully I'll be able to make a working model of the CB suspension, so we can once and for all quantify all the things people haven't been able to answer such as:

How low before handling is adversely effected?
What is the CB7's motion ratio?
What brake bias works best on the CB?
What spring rates are best for me?
What size sway bars do I want?
Whats the best camber and toe settings given a certain application?
How does altering the suspension geometry affect things? i.e. roll center adjusters

                          The list goes on...
