    (1) Power is pretty useless if you can't control it, and
    (2) Rarely will you leave second gear in Autocross anyway.

    (Handling.)

Balance > Power. My friend has an 02 Miata with a stock motor. He has about 110whp and beats S2000s all day long.

Power is a waste of time w/o being able to handle IMO.
You could have a 1000hp - But it would be useless if you couldn't even keep up with the race because you had to practically stop to take each corner . . .

Handling is way more important than horse power. I'm definitely going to work on the handling and body of the car before I swap for an H22.

my accord has a stock engine and i went for handling... was keeping up with and even beating a few modified integras (engine/suspension) and a turbo hx civic hatch that was gutted with no suspension mods.

The integra/civics are alot more popular at auto-x's than cb7's ... your power isn't gonna make much of a diffrence when your talking about 100 feet of acceleration before braking... go for brakes, tires first, then work to the bigger stuff... if you can keep traction and stop your ahead of some of the people there before you even leave the line.

It will be alot more impressive when you out handle an integra than it would be if you overpower it, esp since alot of racing (scca) and such people attend the events. they would reconise a balanced set up and good driver way before a $$$$ engine.

Your tires will still end up being your most physically limiting feature, its all a learning experiance, but no matter how good you get, its still not easy to get street tires up to temp, so if your really serious the best investment you can make is some "A" rated racing slicks, for auto-x, they wont last long on a race track but they do wonders for auto-xing. i would say get some practice first though before you go spend a small fortune on tires that may only last half a season.

Race, rally, autocross, road; handling before power always. Except for drag racing.

                            1. Suspension/tire combo is the most important as mentioned.
                            2. Stiffening up the chassis/lightening the car is a nice idea.

Power wise what you are looking for in autox is response. At least I do.
