    My Turbo F22B2 - F22B DOHC hybrid - s16g

*UPDATED WITH ENGINE PICS Jan 24/07* Next page.
    *UPDATED WITH PICS DEC 11/06*
*UPDATED March 5th/07 - Rebuild complete...awaiting hoist to drop into car.

    Hi there,
So my setup is now complete enough that i suppose i can post about it...a little story to start off on my turbo journey.

Started with my stock f22a1 (great compression, very strong solid block)...built my turbo kit with a 14b. Sort of got a little anxious and took it out too many times with an open downpipe...i thought i could keep an eye on the boost gauge, but guess not...creep happened and i melted a hole through piston 1...not even cracked ringlands...just too much heat from running lean.
(PS, was running decently tuned on MRX 14b basemap when it wasn't spiking to 14psi)

    Sigh...then i bought a F22B DOHC...got it for $600CDN...pretty good.

Threw that in and thought i could be a lot more careful with the turbo second time around...
Turbo'd it again with the 14b, then this time put the exhaust on first as to stop the boost creep. Took it easy for the first week, then the day i got my Tubular wastegate dump hooked up, i wanted to see what it would sound like under boost (i hated the open dump wastegate).
Long story short, as we all know, dont' drive on an UNTUNED CAR! I shoudln't have used an F22a Basemap on the higher compression/better flowing F22B...cracked ringlands and no comrpession in cyl 1.

Sigh...so i had warranty on the motor, but had to put it back to NA to show the engine dealer it had low compression...eventually got a replacement block only (i was entitled to a full motor, but didn't want to shaft them on my error, so i asked if he had a spare f22 block lieing around).

Was given an F22B2 block...threw the F22B head on it and away i went for NA for a long while.

Found out the block had marginal compression and burned oil...upset that he claimed block was good and i went through all the trouble of swapping the head...etc. Went back to him and got an F20A SOHC (f22a jdm equivalent)...soo that's my backup motor.

Turbo'd the current oil burning motor (3-4 quts/ tank) and it's running strong.
Turbo is fully ported MHI Small 16g...great spool (in 5th spools to full boost by 2100rpm...but my 2.5" free flow exhaust helps i'm sure).

    rest of setup....

custom 2" metal intercooler piping pre-intercooler (not necessary to use metal, i could have used ABS all around...the intake temps are rock bottom 70-80's)
This 28x6x3 intercooler which is very nice quality...good fin design, works awesome...
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/28-X...041859997QQrdZ1

There was a best offer auction he had and he'd go as low as 130+shipping...
i however found one that a guy was using for his cavalier and then never used...so i got it for $120 shipped.

    Ok, then...

    2" ABS post intercooler piping
1g DSM BOV JB-Welded to abs pipe
HighTempSilicon couplers and T-clamps (bloody expensive for this stupid but necessary part)

    Innovate LC-1 Wideband
LED Voltmeter from ebay for wideband (2v high-accuracy with regulator...use programmable outputs to get it to show AFR (.735v = 7.35afr, 2.0v = 20afr)...and the decimal place is movable so it actually shows the right AFR.

VDO boost gauge (nice resolution as it only goes to 15psi).
3-guage pod cut to 2 and second hole stretched and cut to fit square voltmeter.

    Stealthmode oil line kit
custom turbo intake pipe made from 2" steel pipe to 2" abs to 2.5" metal to 3" abs to cone filter with heat shield...
this also really helps lower intake temps as it doesn't suck in hot air beside the turbo...goes all the way over to the side where the battery was.

Battery relocation to trunk and optima Redtop.

Custom 2.5" exhaust i made from cutup mandrel bends. with 18" resonator and hooker aerochamber muffler

Custom tubular downpipe and tubular wastegate dump...no power robbing o2 housing here.

Running a Chipped P06 with IAB added.
Running Crome P72 based software and datalogging with Freelog (nice program). Using Nokia USB cable although i have a serial cable as well.

From logs, i've seen as good as 0-60 in 5.3 ...and this isn't even with that good of AFR's (9-10's). NOt sure how accurate the speed reading in the ECU is.
Also my boost isn't very stable...very frustrating...i enlarged the flapper from all i heard of boost creep, but now it spikes at first to 9.5PSI, then slowly drops to 7psi in higher RPM. Not sure what to do.
NOTE: problem fixed...drop to 6-7psi was from pressure drop either over 2" charge lines or intercooler. Solution was to take wastegate vacuum source off the IM, not the charge line...slightly more delay, but rock solid 8PSI.

ran around a 102mph 1/4 mile from a section of road i measured...all measurements done with the logging software viewing the speed reading. Car is very fun.

Beat an Eclipse on the freeway yesterday and a done out golf i think.

Still working on taking logs and burning new chips...just keeping it on the conservative side.

I'll keep you posted...if you have any questions, let me know.

    Here's some pics...

bad luck. you shoulda ran my map. you wouldn't have blown either motor. I made it very safe for you. But good to hear your up and running on the 3rd motor. I'd like to see some pics

1st motor would have blown no mater what map...because of the boost creep...unless you are running crome with Boost Cut.
I run boost cut now...cuts fuel if i spike to 11.5psi...works great...needed it a few times i was attempting to run a MBC.

My street tune is getting better and better...ramped up AFRS from 13 at 0in to 11s at full boost.

timing is nice and conservative too.

and also, you didn't send me your map till after the second motor was blown

          No worries though.

haha, i had no idea. so you hooked the w/g to the charge pipe? I'm not sure if I heard of anyone doing that...I did mine from a source on the intake mani

i hooked the wastegate up to the IM now, but before yes, i did have it on a nipple just 6" after the turbo into the charge line. Typically this is the way you hook up the wastegate...it's the fastest acting. Most stock turbo'd cars do this.

I run around 9psi now though. Fun fun.

they're coming...unfortunately parents too digicam to hawaii where my pics are stored on.

On a more depressing note, motor/mediocre block is burning a lot of oil...perhaps the Sea-foam treatment wasn't a great idea either.

went from plum full to the add line in around a week. boo...

if i ever get the time, will have to hone cylinders and do rings.

                  Otherwise running strong.

hmm...my EGR valve was missing it's vaccuum source...i'm hoping that is the cause of all my oil burning...i'll keep my fingers crossed.

Edited quote to clear it up...a little vague, but i never wanted to blame you whatsoever. Just stating what tuning i had at the time.
Bottom line is to tune or at least monitor with a wideband before really laying into a FI motor.

                            AHHHH...
                            Ok, so weird thing happened...

On freeway, haven't driven it hard all day, just cruising along and the oil light starts flickerin on.
So i pull over and put the clutch in and the motor stalls.

Start it up again and it's making wierd knocking/rattling sound. Doesn't run or idle at all. still seems to have decent compression though.

My first instint is a rod bearing, but if it was, then why wouldn't it idle. and if it was a piston, then it would still run still.

my only other idea is that something got jammed/broke off in the oil pump and oil starvation is causing it to run so poorly...guess i'll have to take it apart this weekend.
                            Siggggh.

now i have a brand new F20a SOHC at home, not sure if i should put the f22B head on that, or to get a spare f22 somewhere and use that with the DOHC head.
