    turbo build smoking really bad

okay i just rebuilt my motor and its smoking like a pot head. the motor is an h23 block sleeved and bored to 88mm. and the head is from an h22. i replaced the valve stem seals and everything on the head. and i have good compression. the only thing i can think of is the rings being the wrong size. the pistons are 87.5mm and i think i may have ordered 87mm rings. but the bore on the block is 88mm. could the pistons be just a tad bit too small for the bore size or is that about right? i need a lil help on this one pls. if you need more info just let me kno. im a lil upset so i may have left something out thanks

    so lemme get this right,
    block is bored to 88,
    pistons, you used 87.5
    rings are 87
and you wanna know why you have smoke?

should the pistons be the exact size of the bore?
i dont remember the rings size because i cant remember if i made the mistake of ordering 87 instead of 87.5

Ok to really go in depth the piston to wall clearence varies acording to weather the engine is NA or turbo. The piston is suppose to fit the sleeve exact according to eye. But there is normally a .015" gap plus or minus between the pistons and the cylinder walls.

Yeah..see if you can sell those pistons who have now...to make some money back...when you buy the 88mm pistons you wouldn't have to put out to much

which obviously was not the case. people say "I just built the block"
normally means it got sent into the shop to do so.
when he built it, he meant he just added the head.(assuming)

yah whoever you got the block from screwed ya.
when purchasing you gotta be very weary about who you get your stuff from.

all items should match. good luck man. sorry to hear, will be a nice build once you recover from this tho,
                        Just keep positive.

This is so much fail on someones part....... You never bore a block without having the pistons on site. A good machine shop will measure & bore the cylinders out to fit each piston individualy. This is just in case there is a fraction of a difference in piston diameter between the 4.

Your cheapest bet will be to measure the bore and buy the next size up piston. That way the engine shop will be able to match the bore to each piston as it should be. If you get lucky the 88mm sleeves may work with a set of 88mm pistons. depends on the clearance that the bore has been given for said pistons though.

i agree, take the block to a reputable machine shop and have them size the pistons for you.
