    Amp placement?

Okay so i just installed my new subs (2 10" kicker comp cvr's, 2007 model 400w rms each powered by an Alpine 800w rmsx1 sub)

the amp is right up against my bakc seat and the subs are behind thta, towards the rear of the trunk.

just wondering, could i screw the amp to the back of the back seat so i can puush the box right up against the back of the trunk?

Mounting an amplifier inverted is generally preached against (fires aren't fun) but if It's small and effecient then it may be OK. I know of a few people who have mounted theirs to the bottom of the rear deck. I don't advise you do either of these, but you can if you want. Another option is mounting it to the back of the sub boxes.

        I doubt it

It is highly unlikely that the magnets from your subs would affect the performance of your amp. I posted this response somewhere else but magnetism follows the inverse square law meaning you have to be really close to get any affect whatsoever, also amps have magnetic fields through them when they are on and manufacturers build in tolerances for these fields.

As for where to mount the amp. What kind of amp is it. Some amplifiers have external heat exchange elements that should not be pointed down. An example of this are the heat sink fins on JL-audio slash series amplifiers. Mounting an amp upside down does not necessarily create risk of a fire. If it is a good amp and you mount it correctly (even upside down) then it should have a caution heat auto turn off and cut power if there is a problem. If your amp has no external heat exchange elements then it would be ok to mount upside down.

The only thing i would say no to is mounting the amplifier to the box. But not for the magnet reason. I am against putting holes in a well constructed box for any reason. This goes especially true for sealed boxes. Think about it you dont want to drill a hole in your box.

with that said, i have heard that the speaker cable should not be more than 18" long leading to the subs. my suggestion would be to fiberglass an extra block of 3/4 inch MDF to the back of the box and mount it there, that way you wont interfere with the integrity of the box and you have a good looking amp platform. as far as the magnetism goes, /\ what he said. being a solid-state amplifier (as opposed to tube-style like guitar amps) magnitism has almost no affect on it.

Thanks for both of those last two posts. People keep talking like the sub's magnets are going to fry their amp As for drilling holes in the box, that's true if they are going to be large holes. After mounting, you can put some silicone over the inside area where the screw comes through. That or if you have fiberglass sitting around, just glass over the area.

Or you could be totally lame and just leave it laying on the carpet trunk floor. Not like that's a fire hazard or anything

Are you talking about the power cable for the amp or the speaker wires to the subs. From what i have heard the length to subs from the amp isn't nearly as important as the length of the power cable to the amp. If i am wrong let me know but i was pretty sure i was.

the battery fuse on the power cable is supposed to be within 18 inches, allthough i like 12. the length of speaker wire from amp to subs doesnt really matter. speaker magnets are not going to affect the amp at all.
mounting the amp to the back of the rear seat is fine, mine has been there for about 4 years

I started fabbing a new amp rack today, it'll hold both my 2 and 4 channel amps and bolt up underneath my rear decklid. My current amp is there on a single amp rack, just using some extra tubing to create a new double rack.

How did you do that, did you have to weld or screw it in?

Ya the frame is welded, along with the mounting tabs..... I made it specifically for my Alpine V12 amp. It's screwed to the bottom of the rear deck lid with rubber isolators in between.
