OK guys, i need to know if any 1 here has a RADAR detector, for the people who dont know, and im sure im missing alot of info here, but there's diff codes. x, y, etc. and i dont remeber what code is for the scanner gun to block. what are other reasons that a radar detector can actually b useful, but at same time detect correctly to radar guns etc.

I dunno, personally I wouldn't use one, they are pretty much useful on high ways. B/c around town you know where the cops are anyways and such, plus there are plenty of people to slow down before you. So on highways you just follow other people going fast and stuff, b/c a cop sees that detector and you have a better chance of ticket. But I too am curious the results people see with detectors, valentine one is supposedly the best, according to car and driver for the last 2 years.

Do you need to know the codes or how good they work against cops? x is for store alarms and ka is for cops. Havent seen any Y's yet. Mine was kinda useful but when i needed it to work the most it didnt detect the cop when i was on the highway. Thats why i got a speedin ticket. And the only way they can really give you a ticket for having it in the car is if its on. So just unplug it. Obviously it wasnt on if they pulled you over. Right?

I just recently got a Escort passport 8500 x50i. I researched on Radartest.com on all the different brands and their effectiveness. Just go on there and learn all about it. They have a new one out called the Escort Passport 9500i, that is probably the mother of all detectors, it comes with a built in GPS chip that tells you your exact speed and you can also program it to alert you of locations that might have redlight cameras or known police speedtraps. It also distinguishes between radar from super markets and radar from cops and their locations. Its really worth looking at if you are as unlucky with cops as I am. But the prob. is it costs about $450-$500 sooo... its a big investment. I got my 8500 for about 300 with tax and so far, its never failed me, esp. on highways, it alerts me about a 1/4 mile ahead of time. I wouldn't say its that effective in town unless there's a radar van or cop with a gun locked on you, basically if you get one, dont rely on it 100%, because it's not foolproof. Hope that helps.

i have a escort 8500 x50. k is sometimes a cop, sometimes its automatic door opener sensors. ka is cops. but just recently around here they installed these little radar boxes on poles that are on the interstate that are x band, so they get your speed then use the cameras above the radars to get your license plate numer and sent you a ticket in the mail.-Xavier

I've owned a radar detector, and up here in washington, i've seen the speed poles/camera's using k band, i've seen the local cops using k and ka, i've been hit by laser from both a motorcycle cop on the freeway, suv cop in the city, and an airplane too, signs in the area say speed checked by aircraft, and i drove that area alot, and there was no cop in sight anywhere. If you got a laser alert its not a false alarm. as for x band, it is the most commonly set off band by most stores, k band also goes off for certain grocery stores/hotels. i have seen x band used by oregon state patrol. So all bands are up for grabs guys, sorry to be the burden of bad news, and no radar detector is fool proof about false alarms, tho more expensive models have less false alarms, but thats when its possible it might think a cop is a false alarm, and not go off. My radar detector was the cheap type that goes off on everything. You could always look at it this way, it lets you know when your in a parking lot, a place where you should be more cautious. Also good for keeping people awake behind the wheel.

which do u recommend then CLOUD, i mean i figured it will go off all the time, but aint there a mute button for the sounds.
i jus dont wanna get mixed up and follow the wrong sign or something, but when u drive like on highways does it still go off all the time, and at times there can b patrol, when u pass them does it go off or blink all crazy.**Blk Housed Slut Crew Member #1**

Radar Detectors
It was a cheap viper 12band i paid like $120 w/tax from car toys. It had an automute feature, which it would rate the signal strength from 1 to 5, 1 being the lowest, 5 being the highest, after a second or two of it detecting a signal, if the signal remains 1 or 2, then it mutes it, but still shows it on the display. Also, the feature that really helped the most to silence the false alarms when i'm driving slow, say in city, or at a stop, it detects the rpm's, and your program the cutoff point, for my 91 cb7 lx coupe auto, i set it to about 1200 rpms (the rpm it idles at while warming up), and that stopped it from going off when i'm driving 30mph or less (due to the auto tranny upshifting), and at stop lights. The viper also featured a female voice that audibly told me which band was being set off. Also sometimes in parking lots, it would say *beep* Caution Train Approaching... (when theres no train tracks for miles) lol. Also it would alert you when police, fire trucks, ambulances, have on their strobe (which is specially coded to change the lights to green for them). It says "emergency vehicle approaching". As for what i believe the ultimate protection? A radar detector of your choice, plus the jammer that if you ever get a speeding ticket w/radar laser (sorry don't believe the doppler certified police officers count, remember all they have to say is "approaching in the excess of (the speed limit).") the company that makes it will pay your speeding ticket for you, but not the increase in your insurance rates.
As for my decision in my radar detector, i was only looking to spend about the 100 dollar range, and that affected my overall decision. The one i chose was a model up from another viper with less bands, the same model as the next step up, which was no different then an upgraded display screen.
Oh don't forget to unclip it & the bracket from your windshield, theives these days now look for radar detectors & gps units in peoples windows. In my rx7 i had it mounted above the rear view mirror, which is the best concealed spot. but in my cb it wouldn't fit there without modification (the actual mirror has to be lowered, or new one installed off the glass). Also if your if you got a stack of cash you can have one installed into your dash/steering wheel/wherever you want, its a narrow lcd screen display, and probably antenna's/sensors in the bumper, w/a brain mounted somewhere.
Oh with my radar detector you actual know its working since it goes off so much lol.
EDIT: Oh it does go off like mad when your being hit by an officer, 3-5, and when it detects laser its like "bleep bleep bleep laser bleep bleep bleep laser" in a tone that will scare you to hit your brakes automatically.

Also don't speed anywhere between the hours of 2am-4am, cops are on high alert for drunk drivers leaving the bar, and they will use anything to pull you over during these times. Between 4am-6am its pretty much paperwork + shift change, and the cops have bagged their dui's for the night, so its about the best time to haul ass.
