    Has this been done?

Anybody here ever flipped their subwoofers onto the opposite side? How do they sound when mounted the opposite way? I'm trying this to hear how they sound. The box I bought to house the subs is ported by the way and the subs are 10" dual voice coil.

Yeah...I don't see it much in every-day setups. More in custom systems and competition/show cars.

It shouldn't be much different. It will change the internal volume of you enclosure, which can affect it, especially if you have a large or deep sub, and will be more detrimental with a ported or bandpass enclosure.

probably wouldn't change that much in terms of sound except it will obviously take up more space. Good for show...tho

on the contrary..the boxes can be made smaller, since the added volume that the sub would otherwise take up isnt necessary. in a cb's trunk, since it's rather deep, this could prove to help have a little more room in the trunk.

It's already been said, it's mainly just for show purposes. It will sound a little different, but not really different. It does look real good.

meening you flip the box so the sub face faces towards the seat instead of outward? In a ported box this actually yields much much less bass alll the way around. Now sealed shouldn't matter to much the particular face direction, however placement in the trunk due to different spots enhancing or cancelling sound will change what you hear in the car. Now if you are talking about cutting out the seat and putting the face inward towards the interior of the car, I wouldn't. Haven't heard such a setup sound worth anything yet.

only reason it sounds different is the change in box size..tighter bass with SQ subs. you wire the subs reverse, so they actually move the way they're supposed to, not the opposite.

no..talking about mounting them basket facing out of the box, rather than inside the box. like this:

It's been done, that looks like a sealed box, not sure what affect youd have.

and dont change the wiring of the speaker. + goes to + and - goes to -. Your speaker will very likely fry if you are pushing enough power.

That righ tthere is why I wont do it. I HATE wires. in all my set-ups I do whatever I can to hide wires.

umm, sub needs to move the oppostie direction to make the desired sound in a sealed box..thus the polarity needs to be switched..
*edit* my bad..i wasn't clear on that..
you only need to switch the polarity if you are using another sub or subs that are not inverted. if all subs are inverted, then no need to switch polarity.
it wont fry if it's polarity is switched regardless of power, UNLESS, and this is a big unless, the sub is DVC and you run one coil in one direction, and switch the polarity on the other coil. yeah..THAT will fry one up like you're at McDonald's..

The polarity issue is why I love equipment with phase switches. Alas, none of my cheap stuff does.
If the polarity is 180 degrees out of phase (reversed polarity), then you'll have weak sound at crossover points, and if subs are out of phase, you'll have weak bass.
I just add one speaker at a time and use whatever polarity sounds best. Its usually pretty obvious, especially with subs.

I'd like to try a DVC sub with the coils wired opposite of each other. Then just sit back and watch as the voice coils fight each other.
