My personal opinion is buying a cap is waisted money. Buy a yellow top and wire it with the other bat so the alt will charge it too.

a cap has benefits. it keeps the output at a steady voltage rate and prevents any spikes. think of an hid kit, the ballasts are basically a capacitor. hooking up 2 batteries in parallel to the alternator would require the alternator to work twice as hard. if the alt gives then how much is that gonna be to fix? do you mean to replace the current battery with a yellow top? that mainly helps when listening to the system with the car off. it also depends on the stereo system

meh. no room for a second battery. that way im building my box will be just like the old on in my members page, clean and descret. I already roll a SUV battery. and im not hitting that hard ... maybe 1400 at a peak. so i think a cap will safice. just dont know what one.

OnBBS17s, you'll want to get a capacitor, only if you have voltage fluctuation problems. This is after you get an alternator upgrade, which i makes it a better deal since having more available current wont hurt you. Most of the problem I see with people cars when their voltage fluctuates excessively is because their car components are using too much power (like a sub amp), and the alternator doesn't have a chance to supply the power.

in this instance you can use most caps 20v and under. Hell, I've even hooked up computer caps and they worked fine.

computer caps? wow. Ok Just use a cap thats recomended for automotive use. Using caps out of a computer would be too much of a pain in the ass! I'm using 2 (1)Farad rockford digital caps with an extra deep cycle battery in the trunk and I've never had starting issues. I'm runing around 2700 watts and i can have the subs all the way up and still my voltage output never drops below a 13V.
