What is it about your door speakers you like?

Looking to narrow down my search and so I need recommendations from people with a good ear for sound quality.

However I'm on a budget of $100 or less. I'm not against hunting down older speakers on eBay.

To keep the cost down I'm thinking of a set of coax.

I value sound quality over efficiency --- and I realize most inexpensive speakers aren't made with that priority in mind.

Not expecting the best sound, just a decent bargain or rather, a few things to look for. Ask me about speakers from 15 years ago and I can probably describe them, but in today's market I'm a little out of sorts.

If your looking for a more natural sound without much emphasis on bass from a coaxial (if still using a stock HU), I'd take a look at Polk Audio. I'm using a discontinued model ex602a, all around 6.5"s, that I installed new back in '01. Are you/did you modify the fronts to change from the 4/5", or still keeping the same size?

If you wanna do a little work, you should hit up Parts Express and piece together a Dayton component system. I'm pretty sure you could do it for less than $130 and it will sound like a million bucks.

I got Goldwood 7"s from them and while it was a pain to fit with 6.5" spacers they sound pretty good, and cost like $16 for the pair. Get a crossover and some tweets and you're good to go.

Look for 2 ways, they sound great, they're cheap and they give you what you need, 3 ways are nothing special just have a useless midbass and 4 ways are even more expensive with a 2nd midway which still makes no difference.

            mrvinyl33 ---

Fronts are original, and not working. Well, one of them works about 3 weeks out of the year. The other works about 2 days out of the year. I've been faded completely to the rear for a long time. I've just been out of the 12v scene for so long I've never bothered to fix them. Until now.

I'm on the fence re: just putting 6.5" in there w/o anything vs. getting DX/LX adapters. I'm also strongly considering keeping the stock baffles and opening them up if I can. I like the idea of the speakers having a dedicated box behind it although I realize that may not be relevant here.

            gloryaccordy ---

I'll check out Parts Express. If they offer stuff designed to work together I have no problem trying a lil DIY.

What's overwhelming is that back in the day, only a handful of brands had components, such as Boston. And they were always $220-$250 and up. Today component sets begin at $100, sometimes less. And everybody and their brother sells them. Brands that used to never sell speakers at all now sell components. So I'm like, are these a screaming deal compared to what you had to pay 15 years ago, or is a $100 speaker set still "good" but nothing great?

I've always wanted to put a dedicated box for the fronts in the CB...but if you Dynamat all the holes up and put some foam behind the speaker it'll be good enough. I don't think any respectable 6.5" will clear the window with the DX/LX baffle...you're gonna need a spacer.

Oh, so skip the DX/LX adapter and just use a spacer? I guess the folks who used a DX/LX adapter and then cut out the back of it did essentially the same thing.

Oh, and I forgot to ask: how thick of a spacer can you use before the speaker gets too close to the door panel?

Oh, and I should add that the Polk ex602a's definately clear the OEM 6.5" adaptars without needing to cut behind the baffle. I know that may not be the case for new Polks. I recall checking the depth at Crutchfield prior to buying. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get adapters, also there are more speaker choices in that size. Not everyone makes a 4" or 5".

I just intalled polk db650s(6 1/2) they sound great, and are in your budget. I didnt need to put any spacer or modify anything and it clears the window, they kit does come with a foam spacer though. There on sale at circuit city for $100. To my ear they sounded the best from all the other 100 dollarish speakers i listened to. I'd look into these polks . pfff only problem is they sound to good and you can hear the distortion/crackle in my sony xplod 6.5's in the rear, time for more speakers

The Polks really do sound good. The good thing about them is that slide into the front or back without any trouble. However, I have a pair of the Infinity 652i and ran into problems when trying to install them into the fronts or the rears. In the front, they are a little big for the factory baffle and therefore the baffle must be cut. In the rears, I can't get them to fit in the baffles at all cuz the mounting "ears" stick out and it seems that the hole in the baffle is a bit small. It just sucks cuz they are good sounding speakers but to get them in our cars is a bitch.

I used to have a set of boston acoustics 6.5 NX67 coaxial speakers in my car. I personally thought they were great speakers.
I still have the speakers if your interested in buying them. I paid 139.99 new. I'll let the set go for 65 shipped.
