I wanna go through with this...the fucking 3rd brake light makes it impossible though. Has anyone mounted free air subs in the back deck? I'm thinking of hacking up the stock speaker locations and mounting 2 8"s there...any insight would be appreciated.

Mounting a free air sub in rear deck?

The stock speaker locations would probably hold an 8" sub with enough cutting. You may have to remove your trunk springs all together though. I guess it depends on the individual speaker.
The stock speakers are also located pretty well for good sound staging, and if set up properly, can sound very good. I don't know where you would put the rear component speakers, with the limited mounting options.
Perhaps the rear sub from a 2004-Up TL would fit back there.

An idea: get a pair of quality, high powered 6x9s with an external amplifier. They are close in surface area to 8s. You could run them full range or low-pass, or try it both ways. If you don't have an EX with 6x9s in the rear, then cut-out the deck to fit EX speaker pods. Good 6x9s can give a good punch.Opal Metallic Green '92 LX 2dr manual, 181k miles, '94 prelude VTEC wheels for summer (steelies with snow tires for winter), Omni-power struts/springs, and other junk

I've actually thought about this and done a lot of research...Tang Band makes a 6x9 sub, but it's not designed for free air useage, making it essentially useless for what I want to do...Kicker makes 6.5" free air subs, but I'm not sure how satisfactory they would be for the level of bass I want, and the only reviews I've seen for them are a 50/50 split between awesome and terrible...
The other alternative would be to take out the 3rd brake light and just put a 10" free air there, and give it an OEM look...I saw a Maxima today with the SSMB8 in the rear deck but I didn't get to ask the owner how it sounded.
In any case my goals are to have awesome bass without a box. I think I have to Dynamat my fronts better...there seems to be a lot of reflections or whatever at the lower frequencies...but yea, I wanna get rid of my box but still have some kind of low end. Help!!!

my sc400 came with a 10" free air sub in the rear deck......a 6x9" isn't really a good substitute for a woofer meant for bass only......kinda like a 10" sub vs 15" sub....the bigger the speaker, the deeper it will be if they're capable of about the same....if you want bass, then yeah, get a good $200 sub, or even a marine sub (free air, tough as nails, better basket designs usually so throwing something in the trunk doesn't end up breaking it, resistant to moisture too in case you get a leak)

These marine subs are dirt cheap and make just the amount of power I need...this is awesome. Thanks!
I think that'll work good. Actually sound like it'll work great
Oh...and I've seen a video of a bunch of 6x9s making 169 db The website were I saw it is down at the moment

It looks like I'm gonna have to cut the springs...looks like there's gonna be a trunk strut intall DIY by me if I go through with this. The trunks are super heavy w/o the springs...

Either way....hope it works out for ya. The trunks are pretty light anyways
And it was was two rows of about 8...so about 16 6x9s, in a seal box in a van of some sort...and the test tone was under 100hz, but it didn't say exactly. I'll post a link when I find it.Opal Metallic Green '92 LX 2dr manual, 181k miles, '94 prelude VTEC wheels for summer (steelies with snow tires for winter), Omni-power struts/springs, and other junk

will it sound as good as a sub in a properly made box, no. but everyone doesn't want or need that much bass.
gloryaccordy, best of luck in this endeavor.

Or get some dayton loudspeaker 6" drivers, no modification needed and cheap at that!

I actually think I'm gonna snag the Dayton RS's and put them in all 4 doors...the 165s are 6.5's, and people who have them swear by them. I think I'm gonna go with that and a marine 10" sub in the deck...should be a MONSTA setup. If not 1 10", maybe 2 8"s where the old 6x9's were...
