Sealed to Ported.

I have 2 Pioneer 12" subs enclosed in a sealed box. Would converting the box to a ported box require any thought or just drill a great big hole in the side? If so is there anywhere i can get this information? Thanks.

yes there is lots of thought to be put into it. either buy a pre made ported box, or you can design it yourself by downloading a program called WinISD, try it out.

You'd probably need to make a whole new box. I'm too lazy to put up a link but I think it's www.carstereo.org ...you have to calculate the inside volume of the box and the size of the ports, otherwise 1. it will sound like ass 2. you will fry your voicecoils.

My friend ported his box back in the day...and lost a significant amount of bass. We ended up unporting it and sealing all the seams and doubled his bass practically.

I'd advice against it.

Did your friend just put a hole in the box or did he tune it.

Typically ported boxes have more volume than a sealed enclosure. Enclosure size, port length, and port area will determine the enclosures "tuned frequency". It's always good to refer to the manufacturers specs for volumes when constructing a sealed/ported enclosure.

Bandpass/ported enclosures are typically louder than sealed if constructed properly. What you sacrifice is "accuracy". I will never run a ported box, they are just too slopy for me.....

hey man... give me the model of those subs or the required interior volume for a vented box and i can give you the specs. ness. to make the box sound good...

i have an 8 inch sub in a vented box that sounds like two 12's.... vented is the way to go...

not true..think about it, if the sub can move more freely in the enclosure, since its not working against a sealed pressure, then it will excurt more and move more air...
sealed is good for SQ, ported for SPL, and a huge sealed box will let your subs extend into some really low frequencies
