Replaced my antenna/motor and antenna wont go up?

Since i had my accord the antenna never went up, so i just pulled it up. Well I broke it off with the spoiler/trunk opening once...and i replaced it, rewired it. double checked the wiring...and it wont go up. So I took it off, tested it on the battery, and it works...

Question is...I noticed the back fender rust was letting water in the trunk from the rust hole. It seems the relay is rusted pretty bad. I read this is to make the antenna go down when u pop the trunk to prevent bending the mast from the spoiler....

If this relay is bad, would it make the antenna not work at all? I called honda and they said they cant even order that relay now...to try a junkyard, but i have to work and wont have time to soon...

Any tips? I dont know much about wiring. I was thinking of just bypassing the relay, but if i can just get a new relay and it'd work, that would rule.

    Thanks!

Try the junkyard, and then protect the new relay from moisture. Majestic shows what looks like the relay along with the motor assembly --- but I'm guessing you don't want to spend $228 for that!

I wouldn't bypass the relay --- that's part of what makes the antenna go down when you open the trunk. And yeah I still believe you need it otherwise.

I know it doesn't look like a normal "Bosch-type" relay --- but maybe you could substitute one for it? Somebody else will know, or try a broader search on for example honda-tech.com

yeah my relay was rusted nicely too, make sure the connections are clean and working, is it making any noise at all?

its not making any noise. I took it to autozone and he did some kidna voltage test on the relay and it wasnt getting readings from a few terminal things....im lost! i dont wanna buy one from the junkyard if its not the prob... but may have to

Sorry to hear your antenna isnt working...mine isnt either...and funny thing is I just picked up the whole assembly from the junkyard yesterday.Nothing works though. So I gather that if that relay is out then the antenna wont work?I tried putting power to it and nothing happened. Is there another fuse or something that goes to the antenna motor? The only thing that happened was when i put power to the relay it "clicked"...So I wonder if that means its still good and my motor is bad Sorry I didnt mean to bust in on your thread...

PiercedLip81, try the junkyard anyway. A relay found there won't cost you much.

flyinlow, a click is probably a good sign but yeah, that motor is likely bad. Antenna motors tend to die before the relays do. You can always use an aftermarket motor and mast with the OEM relay.

That's what I did --- got my motor from eBay, but the company that sold it has their own website: http://www.antennax.com/ $30. It works fine but sounds a little different going up and down than the OEM one did and the motor continues to run for a few seconds after the mast is all the way down. But for $30 I'm not complaining!

PiercedLip81 --- if I were you I might email AntennaX and ask them what you should do for that relay replacement if you are junkyard-averse.

            Good luck fellas.

I replaced the antenna mast last week, but part of the old mast is still inside. It goes up, but does not come down without pushing it a little.
I recommend getting a nonpower replacement mast.

ok, i tried honda and they cant order the relay, and 4 junkyards here didnt have any. Can I just bypass the relay? I know the power antenna i got works. its from antennax and they have a part on the site that says if the antenna works when u test it on the battery:

To bypass the relay on the new antenna, just cut the 3 wires going to the black box on the new antenna. Then wire these 3 wires directly to your vehicle, one should be grounded to the body of the fender, one is the up wire, one is the down wire. Please refer to your vehicles wiring by testing which wires provide power up and power down with a volt meter.

I hate to do this, cause the relay is nice for when u pop the trunk, so u dont snap the antenna off, but i may have to bypass it. Its my only guess why it isnt working, is the bad relay is not giving it power. its not making any noise or trying anything....

Any ideas? I may have to bypass it, but not sure if they mean just cut all 3 wires and then wire em to the body as a ground?

Email them and ask what the consequences may be. They might even have an alternative relay.

i just brought the relay inside and i can hear rust/corrosion moving around inside...I'm gonna try and find it online/ebay. This place looks to have it for $35

Sucks the relay is gonna probably cost me more than the actual antenna haha. I am gonna try and get one from a junkyard if I got time...this sucks lol.

still no luck...i dont wanna pay more for a relay than I payed for a whole new antenna replacement w/ a motor. I should of just got a stubby antenna...my fault...

Any other places who sell em new or used at a good price?

                        Thanks!
