What does this wire do? Where does it go? (Engine bay)

I have always wondered what this wire does. I can only follow it until it goes under the car. It's not connected to anything under the hood, and I haven't had the chance to squeeze under the car to follow it further. I'm trying to track down some electrical anomalies and this has me curious.

    What does it do?
    Where does it go?

    Thanks

Thanks guys. I guess I'll have to raise the car and have a look as to where it goes. It's certainly not through the fire wall, just goes under the car. I don't remember seeing it while I was under there at any previous point though. This wire just blended in with a lot of the stuff under the hood for the last few years, only recently did it look like it did not belong.

It looks like it goes into the timing belt cover in the picture. The other end, who knows maybe its an old block heater hookup. Then they cut the plug off and shoved the Romex into the belt cover.
......father in law has it back again. Time to shine

lol that's such a sketchy wire. But he said in his post that the wire does not lead to any sort of connection on the engine. It does not go into the timing cover, either.

Just follow it down and find its origin. Then rip it out

that is romex and it does not belong in the car at all

follow it down to where it winds up and remove before it does do some damage

i used to have cables galore in my car,
every cable loose & not connected to anything.
the previous owner had a weird oem ford alarm he wired himself &
                a performance teknique sound system.

i removed my front seats, carpet, & lifted the back seats a little to get into the trunk & traced all those loose cables to the end point & pulled them all out
