My buddy works for a speaker design company (carver audio) and we have discussed many things about speaker design.
From what i learned, i know that that the box is just as important as the actual speaker that goes in it. different box volumes will give a different frequency response. I suppose that the box is somewhat generic. Every speaker is a little different in its box requirements and this depends on many variables of the actual driver itself.
Just because the box is a single chamber with two drivers, it doesn't mean that it is wrong. That is just how the box was designed. the best advice i can give you is look up the recommended volume for the drivers. This information is usually included in the manual. Then build a box to the specifications.

If you want to optimize your current box, make sure that it has no air leaks. Also make sure that the speakers aren't wired out of phase. This will cause big problems.

It doesn't matter. The subs will share the airspace equally.

okay perfect, then heres my other question, her 2010 civic has the factory head unit and the amp its tied into the highs for the bass signal but it sounds like it "hits" at all the wrong parts on songs, could that be because its still the factory head unit and not using RCAs? should she up grade to a better stereo? thanks guys

That head unit should have rca outs I don't remember right now.
          Is she using a LOC?
Try flippng the + and - wires of the subs and see how that affects the sound.

Line output converter, no factory head unit has RCA outputs, if you want to keep he look of the factory head unit and get the full sound advantage of an aftermarket unit you can purchase a better line output converter the ones that people usually use are cheap 20. Dollar units hey get the job done bu not very well, they are only slightly better than splicing RCA ends right on to the speaker outputs. There are a few companies hat make these but my personal favorite is audio controll the lc8i is a line output converter that takes the signal from the factory head unit cleans it up and give you a very clean pre amp signal up to 8 volts, if Medes it also gives you three sets of pre amp outputs for front rear And subwoofer so if you ever add an amp for the fronts and rears you are allready set up. Also gives you a sub woofer level controll knob. They run about 200-250 and give you just as clean of a signal as the best aftermarket head unit available without changing the factory look.
