12v wire from battery for amp remote turn-on?

A buddy of mine has an old classic caddy and he doesn't want an aftermarket radio, but he wants to use his iPod. Right now there is an amp and sub in the trunk and we're gonna wire the iPod directly to the amp RCA input.

Will it work to run a wire directly from the battery to the remote-in on the amp, with an on/off toggle wired inline?

I'm not certain, but wouldn't that be too much voltage? Aren't the remote turn ons a much lower amperage/voltage?

Not a big audio guy, so I don't know for sure, but I see how it could work, but might be too much power, not sure if that would hurt the amp or not.

Neither of us are really sure how to do it. It's a 1960 something, so I'm clueless.

There is a radio adapter that you can buy for a couple of dollars and it will let you play songs on your HU without having to plug any wires or anything different. All you do is put the HU to a designed radio station. Hope it Helps

you can do it that way but the remote turn needs to be a switch .... so put it on a toggle and youll be set. what the gains on the amp when u plug the ipod up... you can blow shit really easy doin it that way.

Yes, the remote 12v turn on would be a toggle switch. What would blow easily? We were going to get an adapter that plugs into the bottom of the iPod. It's an iPod to RCA adapter. Meant for a car

Since non of the audio guys have chimmed in yet, I guess I'll throw my 2 cents in. The wire you speak of to turn the amp on and off does not go connected to the battery. On most new head units you will find a wire labeled 12v out. you can connect it to that wire, or to the blue wire to that would turn on and off your power antennea.
But since you want to wire up an ipod directly to the amp. Run a wire from the battery to a fuse, most likely a 10 amp fuse, from the fuse to a switch on the dash, then from the dash to the amp. Most likey you will hear a pop when ever you use the switch to power the amp. Reason being, cause your sending 12v straight to the amp, most radios send the power gradually up to 12v.

The car it's going into doesn't have a deck, so there isn't a red 12v wire or blue "rem" wire. It might have the oem radio, but I don't think anything works in it... The car is 40 years old. It has new speakers and an amp in the trunk, that's it.

DOc, the way I see your explanation, you want to run a wire from the positive of the battery (I'd use a keyed fuse position myself, so it only can be on when the keys are on ) to a toggle switch, then from the toggle switch to the amp.

Do it. You'll be fine. I've had a couple amps wired that way with no problems. It won't be too much voltage, and nothing should go wrong.

Yes it works thats what i have in my cb:

Wire getting 12v under the seat on the belt sensor and then going to a switch and then going to the amp to act like a remote.

The switch doesn't come hot, the signal is only to power on the amp. But i'm not an expert...

But in my case it works very very well. In a case it wont work if the switch has a second ground (if the switch has a led in it). it will cause the power to take this way instead of going to the amp.

You could put a on/off switch on the wire comming from the radio remote to the amp remote that will also work.

Yes you can do it that way just make your you fuse the remote wire from the battery with a 10 amp or so fuse.

Yah, I was gonna say you need a switch to turn it on if its going to be to a constant 12v. Tap it to a fuse that's only on when the car is. That's my honest suggestion.

most toggle switchs are fused anywhere from 10-15-20 amps. so its a fuse itself.
