Seatbelt Help!! ASAP

I am trying to change my seatbelts to manual as well as grey, and am having some trouble w/ the front ones. Does anyone know what makes the seatbelts release and work when you bolt them in? For example, when they are out of the car, you cannot pull the seatbelt out farther, but when you bolt it in, it works. Anyone know how it does this?

when it's out of the car, is it positioned vertically or horizontally.

even the slightest difference can lock them up. there is a little ball in there that rolls up and down or something like that and it locks the seat belt up.
at least that's how it is on a nissan.
if i'm wrong someone correct me.

yeah, figured it out they arent put in totally parallel so they lock up when im taking turns kinda hard, but it will be much better for auto-x...since it will lock me down so i dont slide around as much.
