I say "install" cuz I've installed them permanently in my Ex.
My car caught fire a while ago (alt went out, unburned fuel collected in the superheated cat and ignited). I had a fire extinguisher under my driver's seat so I was fairly cool, but there was a moment when I was reaching for it when I felt a little panic welling up. I was thinking, if it's not here, if it rolled away, if I moved it and forgot, I AM FUCKED.
It was there and the fire issue was resolved, but I started thinking about an install that would always let me know the status of the extinguisher.
I found it fit pretty well in the rear driver's side arm rest. There's a little storage compartment there that I didn't really want to give up, but I hadn't put anything in there in the five years I've had this car. And it was already broken, so I didn't think I could hurt it further. Plus, I think I've only ever in my life had two people in the back seat. So this made it a good location.
I didn't want the extinguisher to become a projectile into the back of my skull in case of a sudden stop, so I bolted it down. I just traced a cardboard template and transferred it to some thick fiber board. After a paint job that was close enough to mesh with my interior, I used three heavy sheet metal screws to secure that straight into the armrest and then secured the standard extinguisher bracket to that.
Now I can easily see the extinguisher and check that it's still charged with no hassle. It's a $15 extinguisher so I don't think it raises the probability of someone breaking into the car just to take it.
Then I started thinking about my trauma kit. It's not a first aid kit, it has everything someone would need to plug holes and open an airway in a victim of trauma.
I used to have it just laying around in my trunk, but again, I wanted a permanent place for it so I wouldn't have to fumble around when I was already stressed out.
It just so happened to fit perfectly in the indentations in the trunk's side well. To secure it I just found a nylon strap with a quick release buckle and used big sheet metal screws to attach the strap to the plastic interior liner.
Not only is it always in the same place, but its now "in" the wall and gives me back the trunk space it used to take up.
