Would I have to take that paint off to paint them gold, or could I just sand and smooth out the surface? And did you guys use primer? I want them to shine/have a smooth surface
It would be easiest to sand the black paint and spray it gold. How the paint comes out is determined by how good the prep work is, and how evenly you can spray the paint. Primer isn't necessary, but I don't see the harm in using it.

      masking tape

you dont want to spray where the bead seals anyways. that surface needs to be as clean and smooth as possible.

Dont mask anything. Juss spray everywhere then use a wire brush to flake off the paint. Trust me I painted rims many times. Masking doesnt stick sometimes and its just a waste of time. A wirebrush is your answer.

        Trust me on that.

When I got my rims powder coated they did all areas and the bead seals better to that than aluminum. The guy who dunnit told me its because of the poleyster or plastic powdercoat when baked it turns to gloss finish! SMOOTH!

          WaC!

shrugs, my friend has his powdercoated and one tire had a slow leak and he eventually jsut changed the whole tire.

              good valve and no punctures.
