So about a month ago my girlfriend broke up with me... Long story but everything is alright now. I was driving home a little out of it, it was raining etc. I was screwing around on the highway, it was about 1am, and I was doing some powerslides in the rain, just a few miles from my house. I was totally in control there, nothing bad happened. So I figured I had vented enough and started driving home. I was going a little faster than normal, a bit too fast for conditions, as I was on a country road (chip and seal), I was doing about 40-45. So I go around a curve and lucky me, I just start sliding sideways. I'm thinking !!shit!!. Luckily there wasn't much of a ditch, but my back right quarter hits a fence post and dents it in right there behind the wheel, that whole panel, then the front end swings around and slams through the barbed wire, dents the front fender a bit and scratches the hood to hell, also scratched the trunk lid a bit and messed up the rear filler panel. I easily drove out of the little bit of a ditch and took it home, rinsed the mud and crap off and went to bed. I was so upset it wasn't funny... I have concluded that it happened because I had crappy, low tread tires on the front... I'll have another post about that soon.
So the next day I go and take it to some body shops for some insurance quotes (decided not to claim it though)...
Cosner Bros --> $3650
JC Body Shop -->$1950
Me -->
So, I got a sledge hammer and banged the hell out of the rear panel and got it back to about what it is supposed to be, although it is starting to rust a little bit there, and underneath where the metal had buckled.
I'm already lined up for a new used rear bumper, trunk lid, filler panel and tail light and I'll deal with the front fender and hood untill I can locate a good price, good condition Arcadia Green one of each. My main problem is that rear quarter.
At JC they said they could get me a used one for $300 ($525 new) before installation or anything. At that price I'm considering finding a parts car or something, cut it out myself, shit. I don't really have any rust issues (minus a tiny bit on the lower ends of the rear quarter, not above the rear bumper at the wheel though), so having them weld a new one should be easy enough for them.
I'm going to try and work with the guy see if I can barter time / computer repair services for the labor and possibly the parts and see what happens... My dad has a decent amount of work done there, and he says that the guy would probably be up for something like that. I just don't want to shell out that much, the less the better. If I can work something out, I might get some other stuff done as well, like the little bit of rust fixed on the other side before it gets bad, and a few dents and dings and such, perhaps a new fender and hood painted, etc.
I was also considering trying to bondo the shit out of it, because like I said, I got the thing 90% back to where it should be, it really isn't THAT bad right now.
I guess I'm looking for any advice you all can give me, or any potential leads to a parts car in VA that has a good right rear quarter that is $300 or less. Does anyone here have experience having a rear quarter replaced / repaired? Any advice at all?
Thanks...
Jacob.
