    Carpet / Vinyl Dying

    I know a few people on here have done it, and I want to do the same.

    I have colours in mind, I just need to know some tips / products to use. I've had a look at where I work (an automotive shop) and I'm still pretty unsure about how to do this. Would just a straight vinyl dye be okay for the dash and door trims? Will it peel?

    In my head, all I plan to do is mask off the parts I don't want sprayed, and then just spray over the vinyl / carpet. But yeah, I need some products + tips. Thanks in advance guys!!

    well mostly it depends...for me i didn't do the dash yet but i did the plastic with the dark black...i got those vht vinyl paint and did a tremendous job.....make sure you sand the areas with at least 1000g or you can use rubbing alcohol to take out dirt or like grease.....

    good luck spraying

      So wait, I have to sand the vinyl? O.o;;
      or is the better, cheaper option to use alcohol wipes or something?

        ahahah....rubbing alcohol is cheaper to do with a rag... so the paint actually sticks on the surface you want to spray with( sanding is just another option)...usually any rubbing alchohol is fine as long it removes the bacteria and other things to prevent the paint from sticking....plus paint only peels off if either the paint is not meant for that type of surface...it can also crack or peel off by huge amount of heat interacting with the paint!!

          I'm a big fan of this stuff, I used this in grey to dye the vinyl rear seats on my dads Chevelle and it came out really nice. Also it doesn't come off on clothing or flake and break off. I'm not sure where you could find it in stores (unless you live near Summit store like me) but ordering it online is cheap.
          For the plastic components I would suggest just cleaning with rubbing alcohol, using some 1000 grit sandpaper (the stuff they sell at walmart by bondo and bodywork stuff is perfect), then do several light coats of paint and a clear coat layer. It will hold up pretty good.
          For the carpet, get a cloth dye from a craft store and remove and dye carpet.
          I would highly recommend removing all the pieces you plan on coloring, because no matter how thoroughly you tape off, paint will still manage to get everywhere and you will never do a good enough job unless the component came off and was properly cleaned and prep. A minute more of prep work is an hour longer the piece will last while driving.
          Being normal is probably the lamest thing you can try to be

            That's the answer I was looking for. Thank you very much!
            I will probably try and remove all the parts and components I want to colour as much as I can.
            I can probably get all the things you've listed above at my work. which is good.
            But thank you very much for all the help! I just want to clarify;
            For the vinyl I need to wipe it all down with an alcohol wipe to remove the bacteria and then I'm clear to spray?
            For the plastic facia on the dash I need to remove the black with 1000grit sandpaper on whatever pieces I want to re-colour, and then apply a clear coat for extra strength?
            And for all the carpet I just need to get a cloth dye and spray it?
            Is that all correct?

              Wipe down vinyl with alcohol unless it gives you better cleaning instructions on the can.
              Plastic you just sand smooth and clean thoroughly (wet sanding is always good)
              The cloth dye may or may not be in a spray can. It might be the type you mix with water and have to soak all your carpet, so you might need a large plastic container, or some vinyl dyes can be used to dye carpet too, look on summit or in stores. It will say vinyl AND carpet. That might be your best bet

                  to dye the carpet right, first you bleach it, but not with actual bleach. rit dye has a fabric bleach.

                  then you use a product called soap ash. followed by your dye.

                  for painting the plastics, you of course scuff it. you should use a solvent like Prep-sol. don't be afraid to go over them multiple times with the prep wipe. plastic is oily by nature and needs to be dried out for any hope of paint to stick. later.
                  Avoiding dirt at all costs

                    Really? You think bleaching the carpet would be a good way to go? :s The carpet is that really yucky blue interior colour, and I was just gonna turn it black. And the carpet / felt on the door is close enough to white, that anything I put on it shouldn't really make a difference.

                    Should I still bleach both?

                      if you want it to look professional i would. don't use regular laundry bleach though. later.

                        nah i wouldnt sand the vinyl you could end up with a total mess....the vinyl has its own texture so why sand it to give it more and make a mess in the process.
                        just clean them like super good with hot soapy water on the parts you can remove then use an alcohol based cleaner something like surgical alcohol to remove any left over grease/dirt.
                        i also would bother masking things if you cant remove them and dismantle them.
                        which is almost everything in the car...the door panels come off and can be broken down to smaller pieces.

                        im in the process of striping the interior as i had to remove parts any ways for the rust removal and all iv got left to remove is the dash are...like i removed the roof lining even and all the pillar panels

                          ALSO if you can get hold of a dye for your farbics it would be best as fabric spray can leave your fabric feeling like sandpaper...all hard and rough

                            I found a nice write up on carpet coloring a couple weeks ago. I think it was a NISMO site so I would assume the carpet (being Nissan) is similar to Honda carpet. Anyway, simply put, get the Rit dye, liquid is better, a LARGE plastic tub ( you know the ones you can buy at walmart or Lowes or what ever ). Fill it half full ( or so ) with water ( hot as you could get it would prolly be best but im not sure it matters ). Guy used 6 bottles of liquid Rit black die, fold your carpet and get it into the tub, bricks on top to keep it from floating and let it sit for a while. He said like 2 hours but i would prolly let it sit over night. Remove and let it dry.....thats about it. Really easy and I ALMOST did my carpet but i didnt wanna paint my tan panels....and thought black carpet with tan panels would look stupid lol
