Can you clay bar a car using water???

Ok it's just what the title says. As far as I knew you were supposed to use detailer with the clay but will water work lol. I'm broke as can be right now and have plenty of time to clean my car and maybe do some polishing.

Water is not a very good lubricant.

use soap, not as slippery as the quick detailer but it'll work.

I use soap after my quick detailer runs out, not as efficient but it gets the job done.

i would only use Instant Detailer that comes with the kit. i definately would not use plain water. if you use anything else other than the ID, you could marr the paint. later.

been claying for 3 years with soap after the ID has run out, no problems so far.

I read elsewhere soap is fine. clay bar just needs something to help it glide across the car.

I use plain water sometimes. I hold the hose directly over the bar as im sliding it on the paint. Also you dont want to press really hard. Water is not as good as the other detailers and lubes but if you use a LOT of it you can get by ok.

be careful though because too much lube wont allow the clay to do its job. type g was right about the instants quick detailer.. i use the mequiars quick detailer.. its awsome.. just keep making sure you clean the clay or else your just gonna leave scratches that are gonna need a cut and buff.. check big lots they have cool sales on auto quick detailer spray.

Yeah see that was the reason that I was wondering if you could use water. I am just about out of detailer and have no money until next Thursday. Soap sounds like it could work as a lube though. I know with wet sanding we just kept a bucket of water and a big sponge around. Hold the sponge above where you're sanding and if you need more water then squeeze it. I think i'll just wait until I can get cutting pads and everything and do it right the first time though. Measure once, cut twice.

Well I went out and spent about 4 hours on my mom's car Sunday. I ended up having enough ID to finish the job so I was happy. She came outside saying "IT LOOKS SO BLUE" lol. I washed, clayed, and waxed it. I don't have any pics but i'll see if I can get some. Later.

i notice the guys saying they use just water or soap and water have white cars.

since white is a single stage paint, it is pretty hard, making it more resilient to marring.

also, marring, spider webbing or any paint defect in general is much harder to see on a white car. later.

WE did use water on my car when we ran out and I guess it was ok but its not good as TypeG said.

YEah I got the whole car done except for the roof and when I got to it I had to unscrew the spray nozzle off of the bottle and dump the rest out and it was just enough lol. I think my dad is hinting around now about wanting me to do his truck. He's always on dirt roads and shit though so it'll look good for like a day and then be orange again.
