This is why our quarter panels are Rust Prone

Nice tidbit I found from my body manual.
This manual contains outrageous information on how to resurrect a cb7, even if it was bisected by a semi truck.
Or if you wanted to weld together your own cb7.
The manual was probably obsolete by 1996.

Quarter panels and A-pillars are galvanized on only 1 side. EVERY OTHER PIECE OF SHEET METAL IN A CB7 IS DOUBLE SIDED WITH ZINC. No doubt this is similar to other models.

hmm good information.. that def would be the a good explanation for the rust
You don't have to like what he did, but I would hope that you can appreciate the time, money and love that went in to the build. If you can't, you're not really an enthusiast, just another dumb kid with a car.-visualpoet

I also have a theory that quarter panels rust on our cars from the inside out because of leaky and damp trunk interiors.

The main reason the quarter panels and rockers etc. on older honda's rust out is because the factory seam sealer is no good. Every rust spot I've replaced on a honda had old, cracked, and crumbly seam sealer allowing moisture to get into the pinch welds. They rust from the inside out, which is probably the non galvanized side.

Well the outer panel is galvanized on one side only, the inside, because the outside is painted.

If you look at a car that is just starting to rust (like mine) the rust starts in the seam between the 2 panels. If you look inside my 1/4's you can see rust creeping up the inside of the outer panel, but the inner panel has no rust on it. Also if you look at other rusted out CB's mostly the outer panel is gone, but the inner panel is still mostly there.

Yes, it doesn't help that moisture somehow gets trapped in the trunk areas of the car, mostly thru leakage.

Yea dat sucks bout our cars i did my panels like a week a go i did not use bondo i seen alot of cars fixd up with bondo and it cracks. But i jus found fenders and cut them up the same shape as the panel and welded it on both sides easy and better then bondo or fiber glass well thats my opinion.

When I had fixed and did the other fixes myself to get all water leaks on my white project, the factory seam sealer was cracked and not sealing properly in many cases. Definitely a problem and it had a big factor in the truck area as well.

Maybe you all got your Accords with this piece missing, but the real reason they rust out (at the wells) is that Honda places a plastic trim piece around the inside lip of the well. (My guess is it was intended to protect hands from any possible rough edges at the seam.) Usually at this point in the car's life, that piece has fallen off or been discarded. This piece holds moisture underneath it, and it eventually starts rusting. I'll admit that less than stellar quality prevention methods were used, but if they'd left off that damn plastic trim, there wouldn't be as much trouble. This is the first car I've owned that I have ever found that damn thing on, and the first one that started rusting out there. Simple bad rust prevention rarely causes the problem. There has to be something that holds that moisture in place.

                        The plastic trim:
                        quantity#:002 picture#003 p/n# 74430-SM4-A00 PROTECTOR, RR. WHEEL ARCH

was most likely used to cover up the metal lip from being damaged by road debris. If you keep the area clean and check it out every so often you can go without them.

I went ahead and removed them, cleaned up the area, treated the lip with a corrision preventive lube then replaced them with new ones. They come with adhesive built in. These plastic lips have a strip of metal running through them. After they get old and dirty this piece starts to open up (when the adhesive gives out) and no longer cover the lip, but do allow for more dirt and now moisture to come in.
