..first off, do you know how to paint? sand? or even weld? if you answer no to anyone of these, please save some money to get it done professionally. its not that easy, especially if you plan on shaving moldings, door handles, etc.. save yourself the headache and just take it to a reputable shop.

Yes I know how to paint and sand, I know how to weld but I don't have the tools to do it...I really want to paint it, shaving it can come later. Now tell me!!!

        i'm lost...

if you know how to paint, sand, and weld, then why are you asking how it's done?!?!

absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

I need to know what grit sandpaper, what types of paint will look decent...etc...as for shaving, i've never even tried it before, and i really dont even know what to do or where to start.

          So sand it first...
          Primer...
          Paint...how many coats...clear coats?

thats the kinda stuff i need to know. like do i have to do it indoors. I've painted before, but i just sanded small parts of my car, then used color matching paint. but it looked shitty =( paint was different texture then the paint already on there.

Can people please just stop criticizing, and help me out!!

When you say you know how to paint, you mean you've painted model cars with spray cans, right? Do you have any experience with a spray gun?

So really you have no experience with body work, right? If you do then you would have a general idea of what types/grits of sandpaper, what type of paint/primer/clears, mixing ratios for the hardener, reducer, catalyst, etc.

It takes lots of time and practice to be able to block a car smooth and get the paint looking prestine. Of course anyone could attempt to do their own, and most of the time the bodywork is going to be wavy, paint will have runs, etc.

So if you must do a DIY paintjob, look into some bodywork/auto painting forums. But if you just go and really have no clue what your doing, its gonna be a waste of money.

$=how good of a job you want done. You could get a $300 job, but the quality is most likely gonna be crap.

                It really depends on what all you want done;
                Same color just resprayed=$700-1100
Color change=$900+ for just body painted
FULL color change=$1200-3000+ alot especially if you go all out like door jams, under hood, trunk, etc.

^just a general idea, keep in mind thats for one color OEM paint. Two tones would also be more expensive.

Also it depends on the type of paint; OEM colors are usually cheaper, compared to custom mixed paints. Pearls, Kandys, Chameleons, etc are gonna almost double the price-since most require additional paint and procedures to accomplish the look.

Bodywork is also gonna cost ya...since most of the $$$ you will pay will be on labor, check into shops that do quality guarnteed work in a respectful amout of time. Also look at their $/per hour labor charges, and you'll find out that it'll cost about $25+/hr for most bodywork-shaving. The supplies arent gonna cost nothing compared to the labor charges, so watch out for that.

OEM colors are NOT always cheaper..in fact usually aftermarket colors are a better priced option, and custom mixing isnt bad either. And there is A LOT more to it that "sand/prime/paint"

First you need to D/A the car down, I take customers cars to bare metal, even for same color paint to see what my base is. Then you need to fix any problems (be it hammer/lead/fill) and smooth out. Then you need to seal it (most people dont pay attention to sealer) and you have to take GREAT care when sealing (wipeing down so no oils/water/etc is on surface). Then there is primer (and color/type of primer matters). Then for best results you need to shoot a tracer coat and wet sand the primer smooth..make sure you dont burn through the primer!! Then comes base..3-5 coats..then clear..3-6 coats..and when your doing it flash time is important. Then for a show shine you have a cut/buff color sanding..

Shaving the handles/antenna/etc is a whole different story. What I am telling you is you need to REALLY think about what your thinking of doing, it is a LOT of work! One small mistake or a left out step causes you hundreds of dollars in lost product and many more hours to fix the problem. If you want something you can be proud of, save your loot and have a shop do it, or maybe sign up for a body shop program at your local college.

If I had a professional shop write me an estimate, I'd have about 8-9K in body work.

They will rip newbies off who don't know what they are talking about. Depending on what your shaving, that's what can get pricey. My new headlight conversion would cost around $1,000 without paint.. but if you have connections you can work around it.

I wouldn't recommend shaving if you don't know what your doing.

..i agree 100%. you also have to find a shop that has done custom work before. you don't want your car to be experimented on.

looks good but kinda blotchy, unless it wasnt fully cured at the time of pic. looks like a decent shave job though. what did you use? metal, glass, plastic? i hope u used metal than a skim coat of bondo to smooth everything out. otherwise cracking will be in your future.
