Thinking of getting my car buffed...

My dad told me i should get my car buffed since i have a lot of dead paint on it, especially on the roof, which is resulting in white spots on my black car....what are you guys opinion on getting a car buffed? how much should it cost?

If the clear coat is allready oxadized then there is nothing you can do its too late. Getting a car buffed should cost anywhere from 75-200 bucks. Take it to a body shop, not a detail shop as the detail shop guys sometimes really dont know what they're doing. Unless of course you find somebody that you feel confident in.

well there are white spots on my roof and in certain areas i see the top layer starting to peel off and underneath it there is a nice black layer so i wanted to get all the dead paint on top taken off

that sounds more like clear coat failure rather than oxidation. cc failure can't be buffed out, you're going to need to live with it or get a repaint.

regardless, i'm not sure what the going rates are in your area, but i'd expect a full exterior detail to cost in the ballpark of $150.

if you want an honest 1st hand opinion you can try to get a hold of Scottwax, if you're not familiar with him, he pretty much ran the detailing forum at HS in its earlier days.

how the flip does clear coat failure happen? the problem im experiencing is that many white patches are on my roof and it seems like more are appearing...i have a black car so these white patches are very unsightly...in the center of some of the white patches i see the top layer begininng to peal off and i see a darker, much nicer color of black underneath it...

is this a problem that is fixable or not?

          thanks...

there are levels of oxidation that can be taken out but at the same time there isnt.

if u take ur finger (this may hurt) and rub the paint in one area, like maybe an inch in length and back and forth, u may see a color change, rub hard...then if u see something then something can be done about that paint.

really waht i do to badly oxidized cars....and on a side note i mean bad, i felt the white shit on their hoods, but not to the point of peeling.....is get fine cut rubbing compound made by 3m.

then i work the paint and not to over work the paint. just get it so most of the crap comes off then i come back again later.

you notice after that the paint is dull like its been sanded down.

so then u go for a coat of swirl remover and that will eay the sanding marks and not hide, but get rid of them.

then polish again if you want and wax it, usually 90% of the time i get it out.

if the clear coat is damaged the only way u kno its not repairable is when you have the paint literally peeling. or the clear coat...thats when its the point of no return.

You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

wet sand will have a noticeable difference. I wish i still had before pictures of my car but i can't find them. After you have it wetsanded though you have to put a lot of work into maintaining it. its starting to show back up on my doors because of the lack of care. I really need to detail my car...

Paint that goes unmaintained is vulnerable to UV damage. The paint will dry up, crack, and peel. If you try and repair just the trouble spots it'll more than likely spread. You also have to consider that other parts of the car will follow suit.

I recommended Scottwax earlier because he's in Texas, the important thing would be to find a detail shop that could at least diagnose the problem with certainty. You don't need to have that shop do the work for you, just let them give you an opinion.

Since you said the paint was peeling, there's little doubt in my mind that you have cc failure, but if you were able to post up some pics, we might have better luck at giving you some advice.

im a detailer as well and would be glad to help.

wetsand is good but its basically doing the same thing i said....just less strees cause ur using a buffer =)

black is the hardest color to maintain..shows all the scratches, dents, etc. just get it repainted if u can.
