    Wheel Painting

I am going to be painting my wheels soon and I have a few questions. Should I sand down to bare metal? What is the best kind of primer to use (self etching, filler ie.)? What is the best paint to use for longevity and chip protection? Thank you for your help. I tried a search but I couldn't find anything that specifically answered these questions.

powder coating is the best for durability and chip protection.

Anything else you will apply at home will need to be sprayed with a strong clearcoat. There are some clear coats you can buy from paint shops that are made specifically for wheels.

I dont think sanding down to bare metal is worth it, or your time unless the wheel are in poor shape. Just make sure its a good surface for the paint to stick to. And you may want to wetsand between coats and at the end to get rid of orange peel and bring up a real nice lustre shine. keep in mind that most laquers are still hardening after a month.

Aircraft stripper should be all you'll need to get the old paint off.

What type of wheels are you painting? If by chance they're forged, don't get them powdercoated, unless you know that they can withstand the heat from the baking.

They are three spoke Primax wheels made for honda back in the day. Ugly as sin but its what I have to work with. They would look much better satin or flat black compared to the silver paint on them now that is chipping away.

Some of the rims have the paint chipped off down to the metal, so I think i might have to strip or sand it off due to the paint being so thick and the chips being such large noticable low spots

I've painted my wheels two years ago and there are no chips.

                BUY THIS:
                -TAL STRIP II aircraft stripper
                -metal wire brush

that stripper you can buy at any autozone, advanced or murray's auto
