get a small prybar and gently pry them out. but watch the axle seals..

A small pry bar works very nicely to pop the axle retaining clip loose, then support the end of the shaft that goes into the transmission with one hand to keep it from screwing up the seal, and pull the shaft out with the other hand.
When you are putting the shaft back in, lubricate the splined end of the shaft before you insert it in the transmission, and again support that end with one hand. You might need someone to help push the other end in hard enough to lock the clip back into place. It can be a one man job, but be careful of that seal.Comment
