The best advice I ever had to make a rattle can job look good was to lay it don in coats, but build them up to a respectable thickness, wait a month and then take polishing compound to it. The guy that told me had rattle canned several cars like this and after the polishing compound, you couldn't tell.

I just don't see it being cost effective.
the price of the proper stuff if you supply the paint store the code doesn't cover hardly any area.
I used half a can and didn't even get to cover one panel. just see what the colour looks like. kind of.

If your lucky it's a colour you can buy offf the shelf.

how many cans to do a whole car?

my guess is 30+ thats if you don't have to sand again. have no streaks. bubbles etc. maybe 10 of those for clear atleast.

isn't it a lot cheaper to just buy an acrylic you can shoot through a compressor.

It might be, but if you don't have a paint gun, or a compressor, or the oil separator etc. then add in all those costs, and the paint cans are starting to sound like a cheaper alternative.

Of course, no one has mentioned the possibility of masking / prepping the car yourself, then having Maco shoot a coat of paint on it. I know they vary from shop to shop, but I think most Maco locations shoot a decent coat of paint, they just aren't real careful about removing trim, and masking properly. Do that ahead of time, and you can get a nice coat of paint for not a whole lot of money.

You guys are using the wrong paint. I used Rustoleum rattle cans. I was able to do 2 coats on my bumper with one can. That stuff goes a long way. I bought one quart of Rustoleum and mixed it with some paint thinner for the body. I rolled on two coats and still have a lot left.

An ice cream paint job would look better.
