ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Cb Loses Juice and Wont Start

According to my parents the car died when they tried to get home. I figured it was the alternator cuz it lost battery juice. The weird thing was when I check it with my DVOM it read 12.28v. So I figured lets just get it tested to get it out of the way. Checked out fine. So I put it backed it and checked all the grounds to it and check the voltage again and it said that it was 12.28v still. So I get it the car and try to start it and it doesnt start. Didnt make no buzzing/clicking/lack of power noise. So I hooked up my DVOM to it and got it the car to see what would happen. It read 12.20v. Okay, so I turn it to the just on, not even fully starting the car yet, and the voltage reading went from 12.20v to 7.00v and continued to drain. I turn the key to off and it started to recharge its self again. Now I'm stumped right here cuz there is no corrsion on the battery cables and the ground on the alternator is good. There is no blown fuse of the in the engine compartment fuse box. Can someone guide to what might be the problem cuz I cant figure nothing out right now. I truely frustrated I use my CB to cruise to work everynight.

Do you even hear a click when you turn to the start position NOT on. Try cranking it see what happens. The voltage goes down because the starter drains a lot and you have the fuel pump priming. SHouldnt be much though. The starter is what draws the most current. As I said try starting it and report what you hear and what happens not just key in the on position.

Chances are, your battery is toasted. A battery at 75% charge holds 12.4 volts. A 100% charged battery is 12.6.

      A dead battery is 12.2v.

My oberservations when I attempt to turn it on, it makes a clicking noise then fades away due to the lack of battery juice. I bought the battery 4 months ago.

I'm guessing when ur parents were driving, they hit the brakes and all the lights began to dim, untill it completely shut off?.. that's what happened to me.. it was the battery. If you got another battery u can use from another car to see if it will start up, try it. Then use the volt meter to see where the charge stands. If it's normal. then the battery is ur problem.

Its hard to tell if a battery is dead just by putting a meter on it. You need to put it under load. It shouldn't go below 9V.

If you have a VAT-40 load tester, (They are scary with a bad battery. Some will start to smoke haha.) Which I doubt you do.

Either way the car should be able to run with the battery disconnected. I'd say look at the alternator.

try jump starting it first, then if it works, unplug the negative battery, if the car dies then its ur alternator, if it doesnt then it most likely is ur battery

I was referring to dead as "no charge."

Carbon-Pile Load testers are fun though! Especially when you have a bunch of auto shop students who have no idea how to use it, and it starts to beep at them and they freak out, lol.

Thats pretty much what happened to me. The starter was old as hell and drew so much power it fucked the battery.

I've worked on starters but the sypmtoms were different from most of them that I have worked on before. At least that was a new experience to me.
