1992 Blue Automatic ( ) Honda Accord LX with 209k
So one day (two days ago) im driving home after a long driver and my cars tactometer and speedometer jump and then crash to zero then jump then crash to zero, and at the same time the HUD is absent, no idiot lights. It felt like a stall but more powered and gradual, and the car had just enough power to coast into my neighbors driveway (i love this car, even when it dies its nice about it).
I go to restart it and she cranks over perfect fires the engine and starts, when i release the key from starter position the engine turns off. Multiple tries have the same outcome, so i search the internet and friends and family for possible problems to find that it could be something in the Ignition switch itself, so i try what a friend says and start it but gradually release the key until the starter stops and its in a kind of sweet spot between the starter engage position and the battery on position. It runs but is incredibly awkward almost impossible to drive as i cruise a few hundred feet back home and up into my steep drivewa, all the while hold the key in this sweet spot.
So theres a great DIY on here about ignition switch installation, but my local (Advanced Autoparts) store wants 300 bucks for the part and a 7day wait to order from manufacturer. But i was told it may just be the ignition switch cylinder not the entire assembly. The small cyldinder the springed key switch is in, not the entire mechanical device slung under the wheel and wired into the fuse box.
This has seemed to be a more than rare problem with this model and year so im hoping for some input here on what part(s) are the problem, entire switch, or just cylinder, and also experiences with this in the past. Also information on cylinder removal/install difficulty would be appreciated.
Sorry to bother you guys, i know im new and i come right in with this, but im in trouble and you guys seem very knowledgable about these things so, thanks in advance.
