ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

Need help understanding retarding and advancing ignition timing!!!!

Heres the story (its a long one), I just picked up a CB7 (A6) . when i first got the car, it drove like poo(no power). i would stomp on the gas pedal and it wouldn't move..felt really sluggish, hesitant...felt like the cat was clogged, also it would rev up really slowly in neutral [also my car had failed emissions test (smog test)] . So i had my mechanic check it out..he checked the timing marks on the flywheel with the cam marks and we both saw it was perfectly lined up. however i noticed that the top bolt on the distributor wasn't centered. so we compared it to his CB7, and his was pretty much centered. so we looked at mine, and it was positioned towards the front bumper (advanced? or retarded?). so we loosened the 3 bolts holding the distibutor and turned it all the way towards the fire wall (advanced? or retarded?) just to see what happens. INSTANTLY the car is reving faster and theres ALOT more power at low end! the shop was closing up so we left the distributor turned all the way towards the front of the car and tightened the 3 bolts. now i just tried searching for answers, but i am very confused..i have read that turning the dist counter-clockwise is advancing, and clockwise is retarding. What i have read is that advancing will give more power low end and retarding will give more power in high end..but i got the opposite results..my mech also suspects that my wires or cap/rotor should be replaced cuz theres a slight miss fire (new NGK plugs installed already BTW).... SO HELP ME fellow CB7 tuners! school me on ignition timing. thanks! (also, is there a problem leaving the ignition timing where it is at the moment?)

i play with my distributor all the time. if ur on the tranny side and looking at the cap and wires turn it clockwise for an adavance. more power instantaly but not as good of gas milage. counter clockwise is retarted cause it slows the RPMs. i usually ride around with mine all the way advanced and iv'e never had any probs just a little more power. also if u have the timing all the way, u don't have to but i would STONGLY recmond 93 octane gas. yea it costs a little more but with the timing being advanced the valves are gonna ping a little but the high test will stop that and give u a little more power

    the rebuild!

It's safe to advance or retard timing by 2 degrees. "all the way" is a BAD idea!

Get a timing light... only about $40, and you can charge your friends $10 to adjust their timing for them It's dirt simple to use, and you'll get it right.

oh wow, I didn't realize advancing time was so simple. I might give this a shot today.

And I like the charging to advance idea.. I may invest in this. I have a lot of wannabe ricers at my school, they may really go for this!

Advancing your timing beyond 2 degrees can cause major damage. chillin943's statement that "the valves will ping a little" shows QUITE clearly that he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Pinging has nothing to do with your valves. Pinging is caused by uncontrolled explosions in your combustion chamber. Detonation. Enough of it will destroy your motor.

DO NOT advance your timing without a timing light, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

well when i had my CB, my mechanic/tuner advanced mine till the distributor couldnt move, and i had it like that for 3 years with alot of topend, and running 87 octane, and never had any problems, but dont consider that to be good for YOUR cb, every cars different.

I can assure, no damage will be done when advancing or retarding timing all the way.

I've run a lot more advance at idle than the distributor could go.

You don't even have to upgrade your gasoline.

F22's have a high resistance for detonation.

no, advancing gives you more topend and retarding gives you more low end,
how many miles on the motor??? might be just sluggish cuz of age, ya never know, just give a full tune up, and see wat happens, especially the fuel filter, now that sucker can be a head breaker, especially when ya fix everythin else and nothin, then when ya change that filter evrything works

motor has 290,000 kms (roughly less that 180,000 miles)
so i guess by retarding the ignition timing, it gave me back the power i needed in the low end right?

i already have new NGK iridium plugs in it..gonna replace wires, cap + rotor and fuel filter and go from there.

also, i'm gonna get it timed properly, gonna move it to the middle (roughly where it should be)

Did you rule-out any tranny problems coz it could be one of your problems too.

i thought about that, so i had my mech take it for a nice drive to figure things out..and he said its fine
