ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

I think my alternator may be dead.

Last night, my car wouldn't start. No lights, no radio, nothing. It started up the first time when I got a jump, but then when I turned on my headlights and pushed the brake pedal to shift out of park, the dash lights dimmed a whole lot. The same thing happened when I put down my driver's side window.

On my way home, the car was very weak when I wasn't pressing the gas pedal. It almost died at a few stoplights, so I started keeping it in Neutral and giving a little gas while I was stopped. When I got home, and turned it off in the garage, I tried to turn it on again just to see what it would do. Absolutely no power.

So I took my battery back to the store, where the Midtronics Battery Disgnostic System concluded I have a good battery, cranking out 736 CCAs at 12.71 Volts.

So, somehow the battery is definitely not getting charged. And, while driving, the electrical system is not getting as much power as it needs.

If it's helpful, I replaced the ignition switch assembly last week. As of today (Saturday morning) I am working in the garage to remove the alternator so it can be bench tested at the auto parts store.

    Thanks in advance,

    Ben <><

get a volt meter start your car and check the current should be13.5-15.1 if not you might have a bad alternator

Check your grounds, around the battery and check wires going to the alternator.

I took the alternator out and had it bench tested today. It is good.

Thanks, that's my next step. As soon as I hit Submit Reply I'm headed back out to the garage to try again.

Get the alternator tested like you are doing already and see what happens

I FIXED IT! After racking my brain for hours and hours and hours about the complexities of my car's electrical system, I decided to look at simple things like wires. And lo and behold, the main ground wire that runs from the battery to the engine block was detached! The screw that attaches it had come loose, I guess, and fallen out.

I learned a lesson today: When troubleshooting, always start with the simple stuff!
