    Starter Replacement

So latley when i start the car it has been siezing up like the gears are catching. Finally today while it was seized i heard it brake loose and i can hear the starter spinning freely. Needless to say im 99.9% sure my starter is done for. That being said how complicated is a started replacement on our cars. I have a 91 lx Auto and it looks simple under the hood. Any input would be awesome

I have never done a auto starter but it should be much different. If its the same as a manual its 2 bolts one is a 17mm and one is a 14mm.

Should be your normal 2 bolts and 2 plugs. Be sure to disconnect the battery when yo uchange it too. But yea its simple. What do you mean by seizing??? The motor is or what.

Manual and 5sp starters are the same except for the mounting brackets....
Your solenoid mite be getting bad not the starter. If the starter solenoid is getting bad or is shot the starter wont deploy onto the flywheel it will just spin inside the motor housing. its very simple I used an auto solenoid for mine, have to take more of it apart to actually remove and replace the solenoid but thats pretty stright forward. When mine actually went, it hadnt shown any symptoms of bad starts or anything it just shit the bed on me and didint stop trying to engauge and spin until i wacked it with a set of grips lol

auto is easy, just hard to reach the bolt behind the starter. Just disconnect the bat., unbolt the power wire to the starter, unhook the tiny wire connector and unbolt the 2 bolts, 17mm i think. If not then they are 14's.

I have a starter sittin at home if you need one.

Not too hard to do, I just did it for the first time myself recently. It was easier than I thought.

the actual process is very easy, its just that it depends on the engine configuration on how hard it will be to get to the 2 bolts.

I image its not that bad with these cars, but my mr2 was very tight and I had to remove the bolts by feel and one from the top, the other i had to go under the car. the face on the engine was warped so my only option was to rebuild the starter.

I removed the upper half of my air intake and used a swivel extension and about 12" of extension to get to the one towards the back. The front one was easy.

My friend had the same thing happen on his 96... I'm changing it for him on Saturday. You turn the key and it just whirs, right?

Like everyone said, it's easy. Just getting to the bolts can be a pain. I think I pulled out my radiator fan the first time I did it (wasn't really needed, and the second time I didn't bother) There's absolutely nothing complicated about the process.

No, for me it when you turned the key it was just *click*

But thats kinda moot cuz it wasn't my starter that was at fault, nm!

Its either gonna be a click or a whirrr. Either one is a sign of a bad starter. Anyway I always hated the rear bolt the front is no problem.

You can test if its the starter by removing the smaller wire and jumping the terminal it attaches to to the positive lead on the battery. If it turns, its not a dead starter.

Be sure to jump it to the terminal on the starter and not the wire itself.

When I get a "click", it's usually the result of the battery not providing power (most recently, it was due to heavy corrosion on my cables). I replaced the starter and battery before realizing that! At least I know I have good stuff now...

my starter is about to take a shit 2.. because mine when u turn the key all u get is nothing. you don't hear the engine cranking or nothing. its like you didn't push in the clutch and you tried to start it..

not clicks or nothing. i had to turn the key back to off and on about 2-3 times..
