Timing belt whine

Hey

I had the timing belt done on my F20A7 about 2 months ago.

Now the motor has an rpm-linked whine, just like electrical interference through a stereo.

I was going to have a go at re-setting the timing belt tension, but didn't see an adjusting nut like I expected. There's just about 1 or 2mm of a nut showing through the cover and it's all thread after that.

Can anyone please post a photo of that?

well unfortunately I only have one cam, but yes that's it!

I'll post a picture of the adjuster nut tomorrow, but basically I think someone has lost the original and fitted a smaller nut.

Will have a go at the tension ASAP.

the bolt you're looking for is under the driver side engine mount. right above the crank pulley.

it should be a 14mm, if not then its a 17mm.

Are you sure it's not your accesory belt whine? meaning alternator belt whine?

If the tensioner on the timing belt is off, or lose, you will hear more than a whine, especially at start up...and will go away while cruising whereas a whining alternator increases it's "whine" as you climb the RPM...

thats how mine sounded. i adjusted it and it went away.

the only thing you can hear is my engine revving and my water pump when i shift, lol. it sounds like compressor surge.

good point re: alternator, but I replaced that already and no change.
and I'm quite sure timing belt rpm increases with crankshaft rpm ;>

I know where to find the adjuster nut, it's just that it's not actually there, really.
There is about 2mm of nut showing through the cover - reckon that's just a slightly smaller non-standard nut.

(It's the wrong nut, but it better be a Honda OEM wrong nut ).

Any pictures of this please?

umm, i didnt read the manual. but all i did was loosen it a little bit, then rotate the crank pulley a few turns. prolly about 180(thats enough for one piston to be at tdc to the next)

it took me about 30 minutes to get it right.

make sure you dont loosen it too much tho.

what if you take that bolt above the underdrive pulley to change it cuz its warped? timing belt or the other belt wouldnt go anywhere would it?

as long as you dont move anything, its good. or atleast i think it should i wouldnt know since ive never done that.

Hey, mine's whining too. It's the same exact thing as in the video, only not as bad. How long would it take my mechanic to fix this? On a 1-10 scale, how hard would it be to do myself? I have a Haynes manual, so I'll look at that too.
