Breakthrough Cold Air Intake
M'kay the details are sketchy at best so here goes. THis may seem like old news, but a unique twist. K a guy who works with me has developed a cold air intake made of a copper tubing with a homemade bypass valve along with the filter of course connected directly into the air intake. However, what also differs is that the copper tubing is coated with a heat resistent paint off used on old steam engine he had in his garage. However the tubing is irregular since the tubing has a large surface area to dissapate heat in the shape of a triangle ( dont ask me not a physics major, but i will get pics asap (if he lets me)). But his pontiac grand am after being dyno tested so-so increased about 23 HP!!!!!!!!!!, so i don't know if it was just a flook or pure redneck engineering. any suggestions?

Oops well the headers I'll replace with lightweight pulley's so there lol. and i saw the dyno results myself so either it was a good day for the car or just extremly weird day who knows. I might try it and post the results or change if any i got to get a pic of this thing its pretty cool to look at.Comment

Well, let's look at this from a technical standpoint .. The arguments are that the copper (great conductor) and increased surface area dissipate the heat better. This is true. But, there's a big problem with the logic. The heat is coming from the engine compartment, rather than the intake. If the intake air were hotter than the air in the engine compartment, then this would be an excellent way to cool the intake air. However, since the engine compartment air is hotter, the heat will more effectively be transfered IN TO the intake air. That guy's "breakthrough" turns that CAI into a HAI. No bueno.

The guy just knows how to work the dyno in his favor. He probably did the 'before' run in very crappy conditions with an abused air filter, with the 'after' run in ideal conditions. He may have even thrown some racing fuel and octane boosters in there as well.Originally posted by Michaelg19Btown

The best way I found to insulate my intake pipe is wrapping it with black air conditionong rubber. I found a piece that was 3" dia., cut it to the curved shape of the intake pipe and glued it together to make 1 piece all around with 3M exterior adhesive tape. It has held it together and works great.
