since we've came to the conclusion that additives in general can be beneficial. How 'bout the weight of the oil you use? I know that synthetic=good. Should I be running 5w-30 in my '91 w/ 134k? She's been getting 10w-40. What is the difference in these numbers? (disclaimer: I am fully aware that is one of the most newb-ish questions ever asked)

For these engines, 40 weight is probably a bit heavy. 5w30 is fine. If you use 10w40 you will probably see a slight mileage increase due to the thinner weight if you switch. The lower the first number, the quicker the engine will crank to get started. This is very beneficial in the cold winter days here in Minnesota.
I see they recommend 5w20 in newer hondas. 5w30 is just fine in those. If you are EXTREMELY modified, like boosted, NOS, a top fuel dragster, etc. then a thicker oil is more beneficial for protection.

Without knowing your current knowledge, the first number is viscosity at startup the second number after the 'w' is the weight or viscosity while at operating temp.
I am running Amsoil Series 1000 5w30 full syn with an Amsoil EA filter in my Toyota Tacoma with 175k miles with 25k or 1 year OCIs (oil change interval). I plan to do the same on my cb-9 with 105k.
Synthethic is a better product and if used correctly with extended OCIs, it saves you $$$. Win win, and who doesn't want that, right?
